The R1200S has finally broken cover with an upgraded engine gearbox package
    125 hp and 194 kg.

    Due for release early 2005.

Could be a new era in BMW motorcycles, I guess the F1 technology and perhaps
some lagging sales/too much weight/not enough fun have given them a shove.

  6. I reckon BMW should have given this bike a new prefix. Some people are
getting this new K1200 confused with the older K1200 with the standard
configuration motor (all cylinders facing left)

F-series --- Single cylinder, chain drive
K-series --- All cylinders facing left, shaft drive right side
R-series --- Boxer twin, shaft drive right side

?-series --- The new bike, all cylinders facing forwards (almost), shaft
    drive left side

Would have made more sence to me!!!

  7. Isn't BMW the second oldest still surviving engine and/or motorcycle dealer
    next to Harley???

When did Ducati and Moto Guzzi make an appearance?

ducati was after the war , but we dont talk abot the war OK !!!

ducati started in 1926 manufacturing radios then capacitors and later
making high quality cameras ,cash registers(which is piss funny for the
    dodgey CASH moite
Italians lol ) and elec razors

    http://www.leicatime.com/italian.htm
    http://www.cameraquest.com/ducati.htm

in 1935 they had 7000 workers

in the 2nd world war the factory was bombed and not much left

They needed mpney and took out a government loan but one of the conditions
    was
that they had to start making engines to fit bicycles , the made the
    cucciolo(puppy)
engine named because it made a little yap noise which fitted bicycles 4
    stroke and 100 k/litre 48 cc ,
made from aluminium and weighing only 17 Kg with a huge 9mm weber carb and
    making a stomping
1.25 Hp with 12 mm valves , top speed on the bike of 30 MPH

    http://utenti.lycos.it/atapv/cucciolo.jpg

within 1 year they held 50% market share of mopeds

In 3 years they sold 100,000 engines and in another 2 years another 100,000

now they decided to make a complete motorcycle and appointed an aircraft
    engineer and made the
complete bike with 2nd gen engine 65cc and 10mph faster weighing 100 pounds
with 22 in wheels and 15mm carb

now then they split with the aircraft engineer as the italian way and he
diecided to go make his own somewhere
    else so they became competitors

next they used the engine and made the ducati 60 and was the completion of
moped to motorcycle with kickstart ,
leading axle telescopic forks and 18 in wheels also featured 3 speed
gearbox and friction damped rear suspension

so then convinced of their advance in the market they decided to go racing

.........apart from the long hiatus where it didn't exist at all.

You could say Indian is old, too, but it doesn't really exist either,
despite the efforts of various main-chancers.

  18. Triumph are much older than BMW, although its pretty hard to argue
continuity of history when the company died for a few years, someone(John
Bloor) bought the name and later started producing new bikes that have
nothing to do with the old Triumph.

Guzzi started selling bikes in 1922 beating BMW by a year. Ducati is
    a postwar thing I believe, early 1950s.

Can't count Triumph, as John Bloor just bought the name, and nothing on
the previous bikes or tooling or anything. Although Harley and Guzzi
have changed owners, they've been continuously making bikes all that time.

Husqvarna might be a candidate, in that they started selling bikes in
1903 and I think they have either always sold them (although sometimes
only mopeds). Bit tricky now though, as I think the name has been sold
    to Aprillia?
