Ahhh, good old BMW reliabilty. Why is it most of the "Oh shit I've got a
bike problem" posts come from BMW owners?

Owen's BMW R80RT (aka Red Baron) has had a huge sense of humour
failure and burnt out some of its wiring in a huff. Anyone with
expertise - Hog are you reading this? - please email us with a phone
number (or call if you know the number) as my resident numpties need
to talk this through with someone with half a clue.

Man and boy I have been lead to believe that BMW bikes were extremely well
made, is this not the case anymore?

BMW reliability is a well perpetuated myth imo. I really can't
understand why so many people part with such huge amounts of money for
such basic machinery. I had this same discussion with Mr Burnt in the
classic ng, and nothing that anyone can say will make me change my mind
about it. To my mind, Japanese bikes are far better developed and built.

I can appreciate how different people like different things, but from
what I've seen and heard, I'd rather have a Pan Euro over any BMW if I
was in the market for a shaft drive tourer, and BMW prices are stupidly
high considering. The only BMW I'd consider would be an R1150GS, and
that's purely because of it's quirky looks, but they are way too
    expensive for my tastes.

I'm kind of half-offline while SWMBO is in the UK (that'll be until
tomorrow night) but if Hog doesn't make contact before me then please
get in touch again with a few more symptoms (email addy in the headers
    is valid).

I don't like Golfs. One pulled out on my daughter and hurt her,
therefore all Golf drivers are cunts.

I don't recall a lot of 'oh shit' posts about BMWs to this NG in any
case, although to be fair the population of the older ones is probably
much smaller than that of Japanese bikes.

Well, I've done 17k on one K100; two breakdowns- one when a piece of
wire to the fuel pump fractured and the other caused by my fucking up a
connector diagnosing that problem. That's on a 19 year old bike.

I did 10k on another K100 which has had no problems (well beyond the
fact when bought it drank oil due to a higher than indicated mileage as
    evidenced by the ring wear).

My experience of the K series has been that they are very reliable; much
more so than a 19 year old japanese bike would be.

The BMWs *are* expensive though and regarding the comparison with a Pan
Euro, I suspect the Pan *might* be a better buy if you were spending
    around 5k.

If, however, you have 1k or so to spend I think that an old BMW is
likely to give you a better chance of getting something you could put a
lot of miles on than an old Japanese bike.

Of course my K100 is bound to die spectacularly on the way to work
    tomorrow now...

Heh, **** off. My ex-15yr old Golf was ace. My mum has one of the newer
Golfs, although at 5 yrs old, she'll be selling that soon. Shame, cos it's
a very nice car - and no way that a brit, frog or jap car could compare
    with it.

  20. May be because lots of people have bought ShiteOldBMWs that have a load of
maintenance issues tobe worked through. ISTR a quote from somebody at
Wessons (yes, I know they're Guzzi specialists) to the effect that they get
people buying old heaps of T3s etc, spending around a grand on bits needing
fixed, then mostly going quiet for about 10 years, 'cos their bikes are now
back into reliable condition. I've spent some money on the Evil Twin,
partly fixes and partly upgrading. All it really needs atm is riding and
    servicing. <strokes wood>
