Mate of mine at work has a 1988 BMW R80.

It has 2 switches on the dash either side of the handlebars.

He's had a look and found you can buy a genuine one for about $70 but he
wants to get away with spending less if possible.

It's the right hand rectangular hole in this:

Just curious if anyone knows of a switch that would fit it conveniently.

He's wanting to wire his secondary lights to it and it's all in except
    for the switch.

Without knowing the exact size of the hole, I'd hazard a guess that the
switch is the same size as those on the K100|75|1100 series bikes - maybe
he could get one from a wrecker? There are several types and he wouldn't
want for example the ABS switch which is a momentary type switch.

    Its a switch like this:

My 82 ex police R100 has some rocker switches like this, maybe motobins?

    "I agree with atec77."

    Just wanted to say that.

I was seitch-hunting there recently and they did have a couple of chunky
switches. Might be tricky getting exactly the right one. If the hole
currently has a blanking plate, he might try making a hole in that to
    accommodate the nearest match.

If he's anywhere near Melbourne, Discount Motorcycle Wreckers in Dawson
St Coburg specialise in older Bimmer bits and bobs.

    or see http://www.motobins.co.uk
They have the switch for under $30 plus postage. I usually get stuff
from them within the week, and their postage is reasonable.

    Reeling over that one

however Jaycar has a very sturdy series of water proof toggles which
fit right into the dash on my K100

Interesting. I've got a custom switch[1] for my secondary lights (a
three throw switch with internal LEDs) that I want mounted using
something better than cable ties, on my beemer (isn't bimmer used when
    referring to their cars?).

Plenty of instructions on the web for people who can weld. But just a
nice plate with a hole of the correct dimensions, attached to a
handlebar mount seems hard to come by.

[1] "IP65 SPDT Centre Off Rocker Switch Illuminated" from electus
electronics, if I recall properly. According to their catalogue,
Cutout size: 34 x 21mm, but the bike is at home so I can't check right
    now.
