Bloody Hell! I have never, never ever got more than 30,000kms out of a
chain and sprockets and that was bloody sad when I replaced it, normally
they are totally shat by 25,000. Of course most of my bikes tend to be
ridden in a spirited manner and the chain drive ones have mostly been
over 110ps at the rear wheel.
As I said in another post 5 years ago it cost me $1100 to do a gearbox
rebuild and get an exchange shaft on my BMW R65.

Actually it was $1100... not $1150, the extra $50 was for the oil change.

Do you really think that if I had a GS1150 I'd give it away? :)

[exasperated look] Well I don't know!!
I can't figure out what type of bike appeals to you because every SECOND
bike you buy I love and every other one I wouldn't touch with a bargepole!!

Personally I'm waiting for GS1200 Adventurers to become all-conquering so
that GS1150s Adventurers become old hat and devalue enough for me to buy
    one!
If Honda made them that'd only take 18 months or-so but I fear that it may
be a slower process with the BMs.....

I'm getting my bike choice right 50% of the time?
I would thought the percentage was lower than that actually.
I'm a terrible impulse buyer Clem, I spend ages making notes about what
I want in my next bike then I walk into a bike shop and I go "shiny
    things... drool".
They are nice bikes, if a bit tall and heavy. I keep hearing rumours
about an F800 series Paris Dakar, I reckon that would be a better choice
for a short arse like me.
Yah, I reckon it will. The DL Suzuki's will probably depreciate quicker...

At the rate I went through belts and pulleys, 3 belts.

I read Clems post as saying you handed over your (GS) $1150. The GS 1150.
    Geddit?

  9. Just buy it anyway, Clem, if it's what your heart desires. If you need to
rationalise it then don't sell it 'til it's worth what you paid for it[1].
It'll cost you more in shaft drives, tyres and petrol anyway!

    1. You need a Harley, you do[2].

Q: Why do Suzukis devalue so rapidly? [1] [2]

    A: 'Cause they DESERVE to!!

    Clem

[1] I cannot logically accept the the Katana is REALLY a Suzuki so I don't
include it. I reckon it must've been made in Italy and kidnapped by
    Japanes agents!

[2] I'm not very good at these footnote thingies so I hope the dashes and
spaces are in the right order or Pissharkey will hassle me!

Katanas had lousy brakes and didn't handle, of course they were Japanese.

How much final drive oil would you use over 400,000km?

That's only true insofar as Target Design, the German mob who penned the
Katana, have also done work for Porsche.
