If I am ever able to find room in the budget, the 1200 is my bike of
choice for sure...otherwise, a second hand 1150 sounds pretty bloody
good, and still worth every cent!

Change it every 100,000kms (which is about when you change the shaft).

How much oil is in a shaft unit? 500ml? 1lt?

    That little? It's 900cc in an XJ900.
(And you can't get reconditioned shafts for them either... Probably 'cause
no-one's ever given them a broken one!)

  6. Of course if you're replacing two shafts, it would be unlikely the pinion
spline would be undamaged also, so factor in a secondhand diff or new
    crownwheel/pinion.

Crownwheel and pinion about $800 plus fitting add some bearings also so
    assume about $1,200.

I got similar mileage as Big on the TRX from chains and sprockets,
however it's a very similar bike as well (same-ish HP and delivery).

250ml for a Guzzi bevel drive. But you have to change it every year or
    thereabouts.

Fortunately my GTR's shaft went about 3km from home. A very minor
    benefit, but much appreciated ...

From the other end of the spectrum.. the original chain and sprockets on
my ZX12R were still going strong after 38,000km when the bike left my
ownership. No tight spots in the chain, no wear on the sprockets to
cause any concern, and still only about about half way through the
available adjustment on the rear axle. Having said that I've never got
more than 24,000km from the originals on a blackbird.

  16. Yeah, but thats 'cause you haver the gall to _ride_ the bloody thing! If
you'd leave it sitting in a garage for a few months at a time like
you're _supposed_ to do, then maybe you'd wear em out a bit quicker too!

    ;-)
