BMW1200gs

  1. Has anybody heard of any "teeth troubles" with the new BMW1200GS, I've had a
ride and liked very much, (I must be getting menopause), great all rounder,

    What's going on in aus.moto nowadays??? You're the 2nd ZX12R rider (ok
former rider) to take the R1200GS out for a spin and like it very much. I was
    the first :) http://www.evilurl.com/PUSSYPEEporno

  3. The only thing I've heard of so far is some pannier mountings breaking quite
    easily.

Disregarding what the press say and how good the bike is to ride; this is a
virtually all-new BMW, new motor, new gearbox, new paralever, new sealed
non-servicable rear drive. Going by BMWs previous releases of new
technology and what's happened to the bikes I've had, I'd be letting someone
else do the experimenting unless I knew the bike was being sold at the
expiry of the warranty period and had no intention of keeping it for
200,000kms. They make great engines but often seem to stuggle with the
    running gear.

Can't remember exactly what they were, but there are 2 issues with the GS12
    currently...
Let's see if BM is reacting to it or go into the usual "denial mode"
(problems? what problems? never heard that before...)
Check around the usual N/G traps.

Yes there have been some. The few i have heard of.. the quick connect wiring
to the fuel pump can fill with water... a gear box seal & a final drive seal
have failed but were picked up by the owner under warrenty prior to damage.

End transmission ...i can hear the black choppers closing as i type & there
are 2 doods that look like they are from pulp fiction knocking at the door.

Perhaps you two are the only ones prepared to admit to it.

    Are those roads wet, Nev?

(this is where I admit to having hankered for an adventure-tourer for yonks
now, almost to the point where one might become the next addition to the
    garage)

....and that is when the problem really starts. After a while you'll hardly
    want to ride anything else.
Not for any length of time, anyway.
Been there, got stuck :) Still don't regret it...

  9. The ZX12 had to go, 4 years without a speeding ticket (pushing my luck) ,
17000k and 6 rear tyres (I just couldn't help it) it costs less to tyre my
    truck than the bike.
So we come to the GS12, I have talked to few dealers, but as they are still
selling more than they can get, they (dealers) don't want to "deal", I 'll
    sit tight for a year,
DO I have to become a uslesscitizen member now??
    Thanks all for return posts

  11. Way before the camper

K100RT (Mine), shedding teeth on crownwheel, sold bike
    R100GS (Mine):Broken 5th gear, replace all gearbox bearings(1), Front
universal joint failure(2), all at less than 65,000kms
K75s(Maries) stripped clutch centre and gearbox input shaft(1), Stripped
driveshaft spline(2), Stripped driveshaft spline and pinion spline on
    diff(3)
K100RT sidecar, replaced worn driveshaft before the spline failed, one rear
output shaft bearing (this bike did big kms, the repairs were reasonable for
    its use)
R1100R (Mine, Maries and back to mine) Oil weeping down the clutch pushrod
past a seal causing a slipping clutch plate @ 40,000kms, major gearbox
    rebuild at 115,000kms
R1100GS (Mine) Oil weeping down the clutch pushrod past a seal causing a
slipping clutch plate (discovered first time I took it away, it didnt show
on the test ride, covered under warranty. The bike had done around
60,000kms) , only had it six months.
R1150R (Marie) Leaking diff oil seal (fixed under warranty), stripped clutch
spline and input shaft at 6 weeks after 12 month warranty had run out, no
assistance given as the bike had a towbar. The bike now has another leaking
diff oil seal at around 70,000kms This bike has towed a trailer, but behind
one person only, total weight of rider/trailer probably around 190kg.
K100RS sidecar(mine), diff rebuild and new driveshaft (UJ failure), this
bike did work hard and the diff was used to begin with. I couldnt complain
about the service this bike gave me.

Most of these bikes never towed a thing John, and I dont treat them that
bad. I just think that BMWs image of absolute reliability is ill-deserved.
Especially the attitude when they release new driveline
components/technology, it fails and all you get is "We've never seen that
    happen before."

Buy a BMW by all means (and I'll probably buy another one day), just don't
buy the first one out of the showroom unless you are expecting to get rid of
it when the warranty expires. Or let it run a few years before buying till
people know the fixes for BMWs design fuckups (if they could have rebuilt an
R100GS driveshaft in 1993 like they can now, I would have had it a lot
longer, no way was I paying $1000 for a driveshaft just because you couldnt
replace the uni). The 1200GS has an all-new gearbox and an all new
Paralever, how many new gearboxes have they released since the start of the
R1100 series to try to get them right?

What he said. In saying that i have an oilhead with 70K (not much i know)
on it that has never so much as burped....its a good one, & when you get a
good one its sweet. But no way in hell would i be buying a 1st model. Mine
is the very last of the 1100's.

Yeah, the ones which look wet are wet. Most of the Grand Ridge road was wet
from rain earlier that morning and a few brief showers while I was there...
especially the dirt sections.. as evidenced by our unplanned lie down in the
mud. Pillion took about 15 minutes of video footage looking over my shoulder
and it really surprised me how fast I was going. Looks a lot faster than it
felt when I was riding it... stupidly fast in some places, but I suppose the
camera having tunnel vision and not being able to look through corners does
    change the perspective somewhat.
