Hmmm... I need something healthy: a very large Bloody Mary, please.

    Happy now?

  3. Heh. I now have to earn how to use Agent. That last post lacked a sig. I
see one can have "personas" but it's not yet obvious how to use them in
different groups etc. The help system doesn't work as the gherkin HTML
thing doesn't work. Guess I'll have to stick it on a windows box to
    investigate.

If it's like older versions there'll be a "Groups" menu in which you
can set properties for each ng, including which signature to use.

  5. There's a million options, but I can't see anything like that as yet.

The 32/64 bitness does not generally give more performance, in many cases
64bit can be slower. What it does give is a larger address space, so more
memory can be accessed and larger files etc on disks can be held.

  8. Erm, after a couple of looks at it, I've come to the conclusion that it's
way over-featured for me. Fact is, I can't figure out how to use it.

    "There's no pleasing some people."

So, which newsreader (Windows/Linux/other) *do* you like?

  10. I liked Xananews the best I think. I had a problem with it on this ng,
but that may have possibly been resolved by clearouts/tidying up. The
last time I tried it on 98 it kept crashing (has some sort of debug
module which is supposed to send an email to the authour, but after 2
months the email bounces back). The same thing is happening now under
wine. This pan thing isn't too bad, but it has some annoying problems
like it doesn't remember what's been read and it doesn't group threads
properly - I assume this has something to do with fetching stuff off
different servers and not recognising it as the same thread.

You could very well be right about that. I'm using it both on mint and on
my occasional boots into windows, For me it's working perfectly and I
especially like the 'ignore author' and 'ignore thread' features.
However, I am using just the one (German) server.

  12. So you don't recommend I try Mint in pace of Ubuntu then?

  13. I'm only using the very same server. I was referring to the way articles
propagate between the servers. Perhaps if someone posts a message to one
server, then another server picks it up through normal propagation, there
is something different in the headers that all other newsreaders ignore.
With the result that I see replies to the same thread in several separate
threads. I know we are seeing something similar to this because of "Old
Cheesey", but this is something different.

And when I restart the newsreader all the articles are marked as unread.
Is this because it's failing to write something as a result of write
permissions? I see quite a few programs silently fail for this reason.
Then one does a google search and eventually someone says "you have to go
into the /etc/bollocks/.arse directory and type chmod 7777 wibble and
then it will work". What a pain.

  14. No idea. This Derek chappy seems to be a bit more experienced than me on
this subject. I just know that this machine is now stable and fast and I
ain't going to mess with it.

  15. Well, I got Ubuntu installed here and it just worked, as you said. I
considered trying Mint as it's been widely hawked about here.

I think I'll stick with Ubuntu.

Now, I'm wanting to run an email server thingy (one of those things that
does email groups but doesn't need to do much else) and would like to
use this here Ubuntu machine. Any help for the clueless?

  16. Maybe a thread with a different name to "Bollocks" might attract the
relevant geeks? Also the ubuntu forums are quite keenly monitored.

You can use mailman, but I think it might need a local mail server.

  18. It does. That's what I run at home for binary access (under Ubuntu64)

  20. Easy enough to set up..

"apt-get install postfix" would do it.
