My son's best friend, a 20 y/o marine has just got hold of one of these.
Apparently off a bloke in a pub.
    http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/vehicles/dom/vehcanam.htm
It's completely original with all parts present, and will try to fire but
dies. I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but it appears to use a Rotax
250cc engine. Could it be the usual "shit in the carbs" :)
If anyone has any info, I would be most grateful.

  2. Usual stuff, plug, carb, timing (electronic box).
They're quite tough things and usually good starters, but if this one's
been lying around for a while it's likely just crap fuel or gummed up
    carb.

Oh, I had hoped this post was going to be Charles Wells related.

    *disappointed*

IIRC basically the same disc valve Rotax motor as in my old
'Rotarini'. In that case the engine was from a 250 SWM crosser.

That had a nasty habit of failed ignition charging coils. The windings
are very thin wire and can break down when hot (the vibes don't help).
Sometimes it would start when stone cold then run for a minute or so.
I replaced mine with an original part sourced from Andover Norton.
When that failed I got it rewound by Westcountry Windings. I always
used to take a spare to race meetings. Even worse, when it died it
would sometimes put the ignition timing right out first and eat the
    piston.

Could be a blocked jet , but try putting a multimeter across the
output from the windings. If you get a healthy voltage, the motor
starts, but then the voltage drops and it stops running that suggests
the charging coil is the problem.

Cheers everyone - I will take a gander at it with all my 25 years ago
forgotten about 2 Stroke knowledge. Last 2 stroker I had was an Ariel
    Leader :)
Quite looking forward to it actually.
