All 60,000,000 of them? Where would they go? Turkey, I suppose...

Hey, don't slag the BR. I used to live not a stone's throw from there
and I shagged a burd from Horstead Keynes.

  5. Nice to see French politicians are as clueless as others from other
    countries.

They showed Chirac on the BBC news this morning - he just looked
completely and utterly out of touch with what is going on. I think the
French government have a massive problem on their hands that they don't
know how to fix. They've always assumed the republic and the French way
of doing things would mean this sort of discontent could not arise.
Quite how they came to that conclusion I don't know - you only have to
ride the RER to see what the outer areas of Paris are like, look at the
endless graffiti that is plastered on anything that doesn't move and the
general "run down" feel to much of the outer areas.

And from what I can tell there was always been an undercurrent of two
cultures whereby the immigrants are treated differently from "French"
(i.e. white) people. Institutional racism anybody?

I take it you car hasn't had a match put on it yet?

That's true of pretty much every single surface in every single big town
or city in the entire country, though

It's a beautiful country, but it's covered in tags and dog shit

You could knock on the doors of the slums and ask them to write their
names down. No-one forced them to turn their houses into shitholes.

I was refering more to the graffiti and dumped cars you find on these
kinds of estates. If the residents took a bit more pride and care over
where they lived then the authorities might, just might have a little
sympathy with them and do something about things like cracks in walls
    etc.

As it is, would you bother spending money on an area that you just know
will be destroyed again as soon as your workmen left?

I had to scrap a car last year, but couldn't afford to do it...

It was only because the local council had a week where they'd remove
scrappers for free that the damn thing isn't still here

Chirac and the right have been out of touch for ages. Look at the
comments of Sarkozy for more info.
Whether the French admit it or not, there is a noticeable amount of
rascism (i.e. by me [1]) in the country. Especially geared towards the
Arabic minority. I've heard all the reasons why, but one of the facts
are that when you just stuff hundreds of families in high rise blocks
and forget about them, it's not surprising [2]. There is no investment
in these areas and the people. Tensions build up very easily.
Especially in the younger generation, where unemployment is very high.

Le Pen must be loving this, as I reckon that there must be a large
percentage of the country blaming it on the Arabs. He's even hinted at
    a civil war.
Not yet, no. It's not got that close yet (thankfully). Mind you, the
car I don't give a shit about. The bike, OTOH, is in the garage.

[1] Even I've experienced it from a couple of people. And it was more
    than the English/French 'banter'
[2] That's one of the reasons why places like Peckham had a big purge
on the high rise blocks, years ago.

Ask the son of the woman who lived next door to my Gran. They had to
knock the whole house down in the end (end-terrace) and caused
structural damage to my Gran's house (which *became* the end-terrace).
