Book fiends: State of Fear

  1. Michael Crichton's latest.

Not the best, by a long, long way. But it has one excellent central
theme, which is that national governments need a bogeyman to keep the
    citizenry in order.

The Soviet Union is gone, so what is it to be?

Anyone pissed off by the damage Blunkett and his lot have done to civil
liberties in the name of 'security" ought to read it.

Yeah, the Red Bogeymen had natty uniforms and an uncanny ability to make
photographs look instantly 20 years old.

Not keen on the new look - I mean, sandals and what appear to be dresses?

Incidentally, isn't this new one (eco-terrorism?) even more a scientific
pile of shit than by Crichtons normal, poor, standards.

  4. The Nazis had better uniforms. I'm sorry, but if you want to cut a dash,
it absolutely has to an SS dress uniform, with the white gloves worn on
ceremonial occasions.[1] You're right about the picturers, though.
Though I've had said 40 years old.

Well, I was wondering that, but not knowing enough about the science,
deliberately didn't comment on it. But, yes, eco-terrorism is the
central theme. And I didn't like it much.

But when he makes the point that Western states are *fabulously* safe
and that all the bleating about dangers is simply governments trying to
re-impose control lost by greater communication, and the internet, I
    find myself nodding.

[1] Tailored by Hugo Boss, believe it or not.

  5. Yep. **** Blunkett, Blair and the rest of them. FERITE.

Incidentally, lob me yer old man's details as I *may* be able to deliver
    that stuff.

If not, then Underground Railway it'll have to be.

  7. That's not the uniforms that make them look like old photo's - it's the
    compulsory mutton-chops sideburns.

  9. In this case: "Stop polluting or I'll break off half the Antarctic ice
    shelf"......

There's a lot about global warming and whether it's natural or man-made
    (something still debatable).

  10. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
Something I realised decades ago. The need for states to have a war, or
at least a potential enemy to spend money on being ready to fight.

For a glorious period during the 60s and 70s it looked as if the huge
bundles of money being spent on space exploration might be the
replacement for that; but no, the military/industrial buggers always
managed to keep the wars going one way or other.

Will do. That would be appreciated, especially as it's Dad's busy
season. I'll make it worth your while, obviously.

My main concern was that the stuff shouldn't clutter up The Chateau.
I'm in no particular hurry for it: I haven't got the bike moved from
    Leatherhead yet.
    We'll hold that in reserve.

    Ah, Ok, now worries.

  14. That's the thing: IMO. If the book does something else well, it points
out that damn few people have any idea about the environment generally,
    and global warming in particular.

I thought I knew a bit - more than most, a lot less than some - but I
realise that most of what I "know" I don't "know" at all, IYSWIM.
