The Bose Quietcomfort noise cancelling headphones are the (excuse this) DB
on flights. I would expect Sennheiser to make a product as good though TBF.
Buying in the USA it was dollar for pound and a great exchange rate so they
    were a lot more affordable.

The Bose iPod dock is fucking excellent too.

I wouldn't even think of buying their speakers etc though with companies
    like Tannoy around

  2. Well they do a good job of cancelling sound in their speakers so I
guess they must have at least that technology down pat :)

No data, as such, how would a few years anecdotal experience in pro audio
    do?

    Very much overpriced shite...

They got their initial boost from the rear-facing reflecting PA speakers in
discotheques around LA in the 1970's, when the music was all cocaine-fuelled
"boom-tizz, boom-tizz", they still sound the same... Any speakers which
require severe equalisation to even start to sound normal (the 901's are
designed to use a powered active EQ that *should* come as part of the rig)
should be consigned to the bonfire, IMHO. Unfortunately a lot of the USAnian
speaker manufacturers are stuck in that same groove (until you get to the
high end, a few kiloDollars or so), and the mass-market is still about
    boom-tizz. Arse.

If I was buying speakers (not talking noise-cancelling 'phones, Shure are
the best bet there), I'd go for something "British", e.g. KEF, Tannoy,
    Bowers & Wilkins - funnily enough, that's what I have...[1] Unless I was
putting a PA together, in which case I'd again go English (Turbosound or
similar) - although the majority of the electronics would be USAnian as
    that's something they do well.

[1] Bargains at the mo' would be late 70's - early 90's KEFs. e.g the
    Celeste range / 301 or best of all 104's, B&W DM4 / DM2 [2], 801's if you
can find anyone willing to sell 'em.

[2] my faves - hulking great transmission line speakers, running about
£150-200 on Fleabay, loud enough for a party in the garden (with tolerant
neighbours), without sounding shouty. Mate's 50th we set 'em up in the
garden, people thought everyone was miming their conversations...

Out of interest, how would you rate Acoustic Energy? (Aegis 3s, IIRC)

So you've never bought any speakers of quality and yet you're happy to tell
    others that Bose are crap?

That's a fucking leap if ever there was.

If Sennheiser don't "do it" for you, there's summat not right in Denmark.
Sennheiser are one of 2 companies that make extremely "abusable" equipment,
ranging from microphones to to speakers. I use Sennheiser mic's and I'm
currently on a see-saw trying to decide which in ear monitors to buy.
Sennheiser or Shure. Nothing else will get close.
They would be if you have moulds taken and the phones built to suit your lug
    holes.

This Americanisation of things has even reached guitars. At one time, if you
wanted a *really* good acoustic guitar, you bought either a Martin or a
Gibson. (D28 and J-45 respectively). Not cheap, but fucking good.

Then along came the American record producers idea's of what constituted a
good sound for a guitar and they scooped out all the mid frequencies,
leaving a thin and reedy noise (I hesitate to say "sound") usually by the
desk knobs where "knobs" is the operative word.

Then came Taylor guitars. Again not cheap my any means, but not good by any
means either. Nice to play, but absolutely no "body" and no sustain. Just
what the Yank engineers wanted, but it's become the norm now so more and
more guitars are being built to the Taylor format. I'm fucking glad I've
still got my J-200 and J-45 and I'm glad that Martin haven't gone down the
Taylor road, unlike Yamaha, Epiphone, Ibinez and a **** load of others.
I went with Electrovoice speakers coz they're devastatingly powerful and
capable of handling just about anything that can be thrown at them, but just
about the right size, albeit fucking heavy.

That's not strictly true. It's a legitimate design strategy to put a
bass driver in a sealed box and equalize the bass response electronically.
Most subwoofers these days are like that.
It's not such a good idea to put most of the drivers facing backwards.

All that would seem to stack up for speakers, having googled a bit more
about Bose. I'm certainly no fan of their marketing tactics.

Not so sure I agree on the headphone front though.

The Sennheiser's seem to score well also though - haven't found any in
stock just yet so I can't make any comment as to what *I* think about
them - for 'phones a lot of it does seem to come down to personal
    preference.

  11. There are times where that works. I've often worked on gigs where we
place the guitar amp facing the wall. Especially with Fender twins
with an open back. You can't draw that as a rule. It depends on the
speakers, the amps, the room and a whole heap of factors. Fender twins
face at the wall from about 2m work a treat. Point a Marshall at a
wall and it will sound lke shit.

I would love to agree with you but I am afraid I can't comment as the last
time I looked mine were still in the packet the came in and have never ever
been opened on the grounds that its just not worth it.

Dragging through my failing memory (its my age, I'm sure).... 3-way
    floor-standers?

I only remember a brief listen to 'em, in a not-too-good environment (very
reflective room, all the wrong proportions), but my impression was that I
was quite impressed considering the price, pretty smooth but lacking the
bass extension I've grown used to (those transmission line speakers go an
extra octave down, without the boomy one-note bass you often get from reflex
ported speakers) - would like to hear 'em in a 5.1 system with a decent sub,
one day, I've been told they're great for home cinema? Would like to hear
them in a decent-sounding room, too!

They do and some of them aren't tragic, but I've not heard anything from
Bose that I'd buy in favour of Shure, Sennheiser, Tannoy or Electrovoice.
