I am thinking of getting a TZ125 or RS125. I keep seeing the terms
"only 1 race on top end" or "new bottom end"... sorry if this is a
stupid question, but what exactly are they referring to? Pistons?
    Piston rings?? cylinder heads?

    Hi kevin,

Top end is cylinders/pistons rings/needle bearings for small end of con-rod.

Bottom end is mainly the crank/seals/bearings.

Make sure BOTH are right (especially for the track!!). Very few moving
parts in a two stroke, but it is critical that they work together in
    harmony.

Then you got the all important jettting and timing. Can change when the
    weather changes.

Fresh top end normally refers to new piston and rings
New bottom end is a new crank assembly.
These components have a finite lifetime and need replacement on a regular
    schedule.
Failure to do so will mean reliabiltity problems.
And finishing a race weekend should be at the top of your list.
