Latest Two Wheels has the BOTY as the Suzuki GSXR750.

Not that I needed it to tell me, but would make an interesting purchase.
Might have to give one a test ride when funds become available!

English mag Two Wheel Only also gave the BOTY gong to the gixxer 750.

I remember when TW BOTY was the CX500. Didn't make me go out and buy one.

Nope, I agree, in all reality the BOTY award has little meaning to me as
well, just happened to be a coincidence that I was thinking about the bike
as a potential on the list when shopping. More of a handy coincidence than
    anything else.

Wasn't that the turbo model though? You're still right - they have had some
non-sellers or bikes that ended up as duds in the BOTY over the years.

turbo (it was stuck in traffic)

No. I think Honda paid for the award. It was announced about two weeks after
    they went on sale.

I did 100k+ km's touring, commuting and couriering on an example of the
    first CX500 model.

It certainly was not the fastest or the flashest bike, but it was
reliable and cheap to run and repair.

BOTY isn't necessarily based on popularity or level of sales. It has to
stand out in terms of innovation, how it does its designed job and a
    host of other factors.

A classic example in the car world was the 1973 COTY, the Leyland P76.

Innovation indeed. The matchbox version even had doors and a boot which
    opened.

I'm surprised that you even know what a P76 was. After all, it was in
production around the time you were born, wasn't it?

Come on, everyone should know what a P76 is. I wasn't even born then, but I
do know you could fit a 44gal drum in the boot! Now that's some luggage
    space!

    I borrowed a mate's P76 to go and collect a motorcycle that I had
    bought......(getting subject back to bikes).

It fitted just fine in the boot.

I had a matchbox P76 but I stood on the street every evening to see the
    Charger drive past.

I used to own the 1990 International Dog of the Year. (Suzuki VX800)
I'm sure it was in the running for TW BOTY the year before!

What always puzzled me was why anyone would want to put a 44gal in the
    boot ...

Those heaps of crap! Took one for a test drive once and did a hill start
in 3rd gear. Look on the salesman's face was priceless.

That was for the reserve fuel supply (something that VTR 1000s need)
