Just got back from the Off Centre Run this afternoon, we got to the site in
the Northern Territory Wednesday afternoon and by Friday morning I was ready
to come home. A fast run home on my own, 3 days and 3,000 kilometres, the
last 500 km leg from Roma to Brisbane was nonstop (love those 35 litre tanks
and John Moorehouse seats). 7,000 kilometres in 8 riding days, covering all
sorts of roads and tracks, with temperatures ranging from 4 below to a
comfortable 24 in the NT. Only one problem I had to swap a alternator rotor
out at Camooweal on the way home, it was lucky that I noticed the battery
light was out after fuelling up so I did not run the battery flat, took me
20 minutes of cursing and swearing to decide to get down to it and swap it
over (lucky I always carry a spare) and 20 minutes to do the job.

Fighting 40 kph headwinds in the Northern Territory saw fuel consumption on
the R100GSPD drop to 11.5 kilometres per litre, and viscous crosswinds saw
us riding sideways for hundreds of kilometres at a time. About 600
kilometres of the trip was dirt roads and tracks, hitting bulldust holes at
120 kph was interesting but following the advice of more experienced dirt
riders and gassing it up standing up and putting my weight to the rear saw
me come through the trip with no damage except some soiled underwear.

Fuel prices ranged from $1.45 to $3.00 per litre with consistent prices of
    $2.00 per litre being normal.

An alternator rotor is a standard spare for a BMW Boxer motor when
travelling in outback areas. I have had 2 fail over the past 4 years one 50
kilometres east of Innaminka and this one at Camooweal. Other spares carried
included 2 tubes, tubeless repair kit, ignition trigger unit, Diode Board,
spare spark plugs and 2 spare plug caps, 1 litre of oil, comprehensive tool
kit, lengths of electrical wire, gas soldering tool, role of duct tape, zip
ties, nuts & bolts, bead breaker tool, etc.

In very remote areas you have to take care of yourself as the RACQ in many
    cases will not come.

Good effort boxer - some pretty long daysI bet..

What sort of speed do you sit on to get 500 out of your tank?
I only seem to manage 450 out of mine even sitting on the speed limit. Maybe
I need to look and my needle jets??

I got 500 k's and did not hit reserve so I would guess about 600 including
full reserve. I sat on 100-110 kph with the throttle lock on.

Today I left Tambo at 8:00 am (it was about 3 degrees at the time) and got
home at 5:00pm, 861 kilometres in 9 hours, I only stopped for fuel and a
sandwich & coffee at Roma for 30 minutes so for the 8 1/2 hours was on the
road sitting on 100-110 kph. Any faster and my fuel consumption would
    increace dramatically.

The previous 2 days I started riding at 7:00am and finished on dark at about
    6:00pm.

Needle jets wear and should be considered a service item.

I dragged a trailor Saturday to west of Maryborough from Browns Plains
in Brisbane in under 3 hours sucking 34 litres of Bio fuel at around 3
tonnes with trailor and bikes to participate in a vintage trials ( huge
fun) then drove back sensibly in under 3 hours using 26 litres of fuel ,
almost 600 k in under 6 hours and had a great day , now I woulda rode
but where would I put the Sherpa ?
Bloody hard driving whilst listening to Vivaldi swilling hot sweet
tea and nibbling on tintams :)

Did not see any Guzzi's at Birdsville, lots of BMW's and KTM's, not a Guzzi
    in sight.

Hmm, Are they like the ones I had when I rode the Cali II from Perth
to Adelaide in '85. Bike was a week old with 1000 kms on it, when I
got to Adelaide I had to find a tyre shop.

No, they're like riding next to a pre-unit Triumph.
