Well ... actually most of the motorcycle "carnage" appears to be visiting
    riders from Liverpool/Manchester/Birmingham.

I just too a peek through the arrive alive websites though and on certain
roads they'd whitter on about 35 accidents in such and such a time scale,
and then say summat like 7 cyclists and 1 motorcyclist. So unless I'm
missing the point should'nt they be harrassing the cyclist touring club or
    something?

I think your calculations are wrong. North Wales is the playground for
scousers & brummies, so a ratio of 15:1 would be closer.

    Re: Your "Arrive Alive" article.

I really can't believe what you're saying. You can't invite a load of
press to a 'meeting' and not expect them to report on your autistic
management of your fascicle road safety project.

Hint: If you invite a load of press to a room and talk to them it's
called a "Press Conference" - If you wanted it to not be reported then
why on earth did you invite them?

You're fucking bonkers, I can only hope that you're one day sacked and
lose your pension for your lunatic attitude.

I like the opportunity to add one's own comment on Brunstrom's
stupidity. Along with "please enter your postcode here", yes right, and
then find yourself targetted wherever you go for ever after.

    "Aggravated mopery"

"Being in possession of an offensive wife"

"Wearing loud clothes in a built up area"

"The suspect assaulted a police officer by repeatedly striking the
officer's foot causing severe bruising. It was a malicious and sustained
attack involving repeated impacts of the suspect's groin on the
    officer's foot."

  14. Um, quite a lot, in fact a helluva lot, of info is given 'off the
    record'. Especially in political journalism.

Or it's given as a quiet briefing, not attributable, and "we didn't say
    that".

The reason for this is generally to make certain that hacks *are* in
possession of the facts, and that hopefully they'll find another way of
'discovering' (and proving) them and thereby publicising them so the
source that provided them originally isn't the official source, IYSWIM.

I deal with this on a daily basis.

The rules are, quite simply, that info given in such a manner is not to
be splashed across the pages the next day, with a tag as to who said it.

In much the same manner, info is very often "embargoed": in other words,
a press release, or a briefing, is given on the understanding that it
won't be released until such-and-such a date or time. New product
    launches are very frequently embargoed.

A hack who decides to break a confidence, or an embargo, is a twat, and
it's not the sort of mistake you make twice, if you're ever forgiven for
    making it once.

This, of course, doesn't avoid the fact that Brainstorm is a raving
nutter and ought to be locked up.

Didn't think I'd find myself defending the twat, but as I read it his
    argument goes:

    1. Much of the media trivialise road deaths;
    2. I want the media onside for my Arrive Alive project;
    3. So I hold a closed meeting (not a press briefing) with journalists and
    others, in confidence, to make clear what we are doing and why;
    4. As part of this awareness-raising, I show them a few graphically horrible
    pictures of what we are trying to prevent;
    5. One journalist breaks ranks and goes public with the story, leading to
    identification of the dead rider;
    6. If anyone has caused suffering to the rider's family, it is that
    journalist and not me.

I don't think that's an unreasonable take on events in the circumstances.
(Whether the project is a good idea, and whether his obsession with speed is
evidence of OCD or mere insanity, are another matter.) If I could find the
journalist responsible for breaking the story, I'd like to ask him what good
he hoped to achieve in doing so.

The higher ups at various police forces across the Uk care so much for
road safety that they bought 500+ bikes which were unsafe at the legal
limit. And then authorised their use at speeds significantly above the
    legal limit.

If ever an illustration was needed of how little road safety actually
means to these posturing fools. That was it.

Well that, and examples like North Yorkshire's CC trying to buy alcohol
while in uniform and spending £28,000 on her personal shower and a
further shedload of dosh on a deck and parasol for her to lounge around
on/under, and spending £500,000 on a fleet of up-market cars to be used
only for senior officers to swan around in.

  18. I hope you're not really going to do that.
    That's OK then you haven't.
Some 15 years ago my employers sent me on a course including "Critical
Path Analysis" so we could isolate the points at which an adverse
event might cause the whole project to become stalled, never used BTW

We can apply it in this case in reverse and ask ourselves at what
stage was it possible to make a decision that would 100% ensure that
the dead man's picture did not get published.

The answer is simple if El Twat had not released the pictures to
journalists it would have not been possible for them to be published.

As the police are so fond of saying to members of the public such as I
who delay them at 3 minutes to knocking off time, "He had plenty of
alternatives". Eg identifying features pixellated out, use an artists
    impression, line drawing , whatever.

    SNIP!

I know that. However, if you read Brainstorm's "defence" in his blog you
will notice that he doesn't state anywhere that the briefing was
confidential or "off the record". All he says is that it was a closed
meeting, that those attending were told they would see grisly pictures and
that plod wouldn't be releasing the pictures to the public. It seems clear
that his intention was to try to get the journos on his side and that he
thought showing them the pictures would help. He was probably expecting
them to write about "carnage caused by motorcycles" or some such twaddle.
However, he didn't take into account the possibility that the journos might
put a different slant on the event. Hoisted by his own petard - the
arrogant twat richly deserves the slagging he got from the press.

He didn't release the pictures to journalists: they were shown at a meeting,
presumably on a screen. AIUI, they have not yet been published. The biker
was wearing a T-shirt with an "anti-police message" [1], the journo noted
the message, asked around and the rider was identified. V-strom might be an
arrogant, clueless and obsessional twat, but it was the journalist who
caused the grief and distress to the biker's family (if any were caused).

[1] I wonder if this had anything to do with the choice of "carnage victim"?
