Bollocks - I have just noticed that he claims that the pictures were shown
"in confidence" in the last paragraph of his excuses. However, I still feel
he has been hoist by his own petard. In some ways I think it makes it worse
if he feels that he can secretly canvass support from the media.

Doubt it. It's more likely that decapitated bikers get Brunstrom hard.
He probably has the picture as his desktop wallpaper.

    Please pass the mind bleach.

Back OT - I wonder if this hasn't been a bit of an own goal, though. Now
everybody knows the biker's T-shirt read "Piss off and catch some real
criminals". I wonder what % of the population read that and thought "hey,
    the guy had a point".

I do. What right did he have to use the dead rider's picture in the
first place? What if one of the journalist's was a relative?
And did he really expect a "closed meeting" filled with journalists
to "keep a secret"? He deserves to be sacked for being THAT stupid.
Journalists are there to report events. I suppose he hoped to get paid
for doing his job, just like Mr Brunstrom.

No. Brunstrom chose to display a photograph containing personally
identifiable information, TO A ROOM FILLED WITH JOURNALISTS. Assuming it's
not a breach of the Data Protection Act, it's still idiotic.

    Nope,
"Living in a residential area during the hours of darkness"

    then
    "Living Dangerously."

and "Wilfully continuing to live, after being asked to stop by a Police
    Officer."

You're right there. I wasn't saying he was clever or far-sighted; just that
I could see his reasoning, and that if anyone caused grief to the biker's
relatives, it was the journalist more than the twattish CC.

It's becoming clearer. He warned the journalists to expect some horrific
images, he told them they would not be released into the public domain (i.e.
by him), but he never asked them to refrain from referring to them, or made
that a condition of attendance. (If he had done so, he would surely have
mentioned this in his defence.) If the briefing were internal to the
Police, I would say he was OK to do it, but the press briefing was
effectively a public meeting under these circumstances. I think his blaming
of the media for the subsequent furore is disingenuous at the least.
    (Executive summary: yep, he's a ****.)

"The Force" has apologised - not Bumstirrer personally. Not good enough.

One detail from the original report was that his deputy described how the
biker's "oxygenated brain" travelled 50m down the road - implying, I assume,
that he was still conscious. If that isn't shlock-horror sensationalism, I
    don't know what is.

  19. Depends what speed they were doing it at. Fast moving chalk can be
