Brake caliper O-rings

I've had to split the rear calliper on Clare's GSX600F to try to get
    those stupid pins out.

The O-ring is, unsurprisingly, absolutely knackered, and so misshapen
that there's no point trying to measure it to determine its size.

Does anyone know somewhere that I can find out what size of O-ring is
needed? Or should I be able to work it out from the hole that it sits in?

I thought of asking at the local Suzuki dealer, but I expect they'd tell
me to buy a complete new calliper.

  2. Can't help but I had the same problem and the Local Yam dealer told me
    exactly that.

Even went so far as to deny that it was possible to buy a suitable 'o'
    ring full stop...

Yeah. so were the f**k to Yamaha get them from.

I bought a load of diferent sizes from a local motorfactor and one
    fitted.

I'd just take the caliper to a good auto accessory shop (ie: one of
those clued-up independents that still has old Motorcraft boxes stacked
near the ceiling) and ask for one to fit. I think some neoprene O-rings
aren't brake fluid resistant, so it's worth making the point (mind you,
waving a brake caliper will be a Big Clue).

I once bought a small box of assorted O-rings for a couple of quid and
it it's been very useful over the years, especially as bike parts
prices mean the damn things cost a couple of quid *each*.

You should be OK, really - the two halves are clamped together and the
chance of any fluid leakage past the ring is minimal. In fact, I've
never ever seen a caliper leak from the joint.

Aye, I was thinking of getting something that just about fits in the
recess - as long as the two halves go back together with no gap, there
    shouldn't be a leak.

For Sale: 27 billion o-rings. Will split. :)

Aye, it'll save me the leg work, if nothing else.
Close enough for a SOB, anyway.
You know, this might be the frozen wastelands of the North, but I think
they have those up here as well.

He already has a split one ...

.... but the O-ring's more of a mushy mess, actually.

  9. O-rings for brake fluid usage are usually made from EPDM

However, if you wash this synthetic rubber in petrol or contaminate it with
mineral oil, it will swell up...

I've been told that Suzuki sell those things separately but Yamaha
don't. I've heard of one guy who took his Yamaha caliper halves to a
Suzuki dealer to get some O-rings.

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Biker2 \(Threadstopper\)" <steve
at pvl dot co dot uk> saying something like:
Electro-Plated Doc Martins? Makes some sort of crazy sense.

  12. Just call up the guy at Spares Direct and you'll have a new one in
your letterbox the next day. That's what I did, "I need all the rubber
bits for all the calipers on a GSX600F." "Right, did you split the
    calipers?" "Yes." <pause> "That'll be £81.42."

Part no. seems to be 6910734200 @ £2.83 per plus VAT. Postage on my lot was
£1.64 plus 1.00 for recorded delivery.

    Tel: 020 8969 0741 FAX: 020 8960 6299

I've got the URL at work for a web-site with the parts list
    for a GSX600F if you'd like it.

    *boggle*

Spares Direct are very good, but I certainly don't want to buy the whole
    lot.
I'll probably just give the local Suzuki dealer a ring and ask them to
    get one in.

Or... I might just buy one of those boxes of assorted O-rings, which
I've been meaning to do for ages.
Yeah, please - probably come in handy.

  16. Well, yes, but I was impressed that he was able to source all the
parts I wanted in very short order without my having to go into any more
detail than above (OK, he probably asked me the year model too).
http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm -- all Suzis, actually (US
    market, of course).

Oh, yes. They always seem to have everything in stock, too. And they
don't charge an extortionate amount for the P&P, unlike some other
places I tried before I found them.
    Excellent.

Don't think I'll be buying from them, though: $7.60 for the O-ring!

  18. Did you notice that in recent models the caliper o-ring appears not
to be available separately? It looks like you have to buy a caliper kit
of o-ring(s), piston seals, and dust cover/wiper all in one.

No, I only looked at the model I was interested in.

Bit annoying if you only want one item, really.
