Brake Question

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Michael Chester, Feb 9, 2004.

  1. Are brake lever / master cylinder assemblies ( the bit on the handle bar )
matched set with the caliper , i.e. can I put a Kawasaki lever assembly on a
Honda Caliper ? if the threads and bolts all fit, or is there a dark secret
    of compatibility

Sometimes the slot the lever goes in is wider or narrower than the lever
you have. Wider isn't all that much of a problem except it rattles.

Sometimes the ends of the levers are different lengths or shapes, and
won't engage whatever they are supposed to engage at the right angle, or
    push soemthing in far enough.

all you can do is suck it and see... if you have a lever to match
against, then eyeball the differences and peer into the master cylinder
slot to see what it has to engage.

Naah; all the Jap stuff is virtually identical 5/8th inch diameter piston.
You'd be pretty unlucky to find one that doesn't work.

(actually; all the non-jap stuff probably is too!)

Make sure the line-diameter is the same and both units were set out to
service the same number of discs (i.e. don't use a master cyl. designed for
a single disc front end on a twin-disc front end, the other way around
    should be fine).
As a general rule, it's usually safer to use a bigger (volume) master-cyl
    than the original one.

  14. I was going to say as long as they have the same power, you don't want to
have a cylinder that at fill squirt only engages the caliper 1/2 on. being
hydraulic big to small its unlikely tho..

Thanks all, I'll give it a go, I've got a YZ125 1988 front end on the old
IT490, so i'm looking to make the feel and power a bit different.
