Probably because it's nothing to do with discouraging people from
driving into the CBD. If they wanted to do that they'd just reduce the
amount of available on and off street car parking spots. That would
force people to use public transport, and the funding would take care of
itself, and after a while the services would probably improve.

I don't know about Sydney but I've long said that Brisbane's busses
should be free. (Just paid for out of rates revenue).
It'd make them more efficient with quicker stops (you could have more
doors too) and it'd give people no reason to drive.

I have had a long discussion about this issue with the Mayor, the problem
with a free Bus system paid for by ratepayers is that over half the people
who use Brisbane Buses are not ratepayers in Brisbane.

Commuters from, Redland Shire, Logan City, Ipswich City, Beaudesert Shire
(now Scenic Rim Regional Council) Redcliffe, Caboolture and Pine Rivers, do
not contribute to the Brisbane Rate base, and their Councils do not run a
bus system and have refused to contribute to the Brisbane System. Perhaps if
the State Government took it over you may be able to get some equity into
    the system.

As a Brisbane Rate payer who dose not use the Bus system (and can not use it
for my travel needs) I am annoyed that I subidise it through rates now. A
totally free system would add about $500 per year to everyones rate bill
regardless of useage or coverage of the system.

Does it costs 500 million per year to run the Brisbane buses?!!?
Also I'd be surprised if over half the passengers are from outside Brisbane.
Some revenue could be gathered from paid secure Park 'N Rides.
Either way I reckon it's still worthwhile at $500 per residence per year.
Tough for the work-from-home people and the oldies (pensioner discount) but
it'd be worthwhile for the rest.

I did not say that half the passengers are from outside Brisbane, I said
that half the passengers are not Ratepayers in Brisbane.

[confused look] How can they live in Brisbane but not be paying rates
(either directly or indirectly through rent/board)?
Are they living on the streets?

In my area a lot of overseas students use the busses, they are not
ratepayers. Why should ratepayers pay for their transport?

A rate payer is someone who writes out a cheque for Rates. A rather simple
    definition really.

I work at home, why should I subsidise bus transport at all?

Because every bus travellor reduces the number of cars on the road which
makes riding a bike easier and safer :)

    Conveniently limitimg definition!
Are you gonna' ban Michelle and gNat from using the buses 'cause I'm the
only one who writes out the BPay for the rates too?
Yep; work from home people will be ripped off, no argument. Same as people
whose houses don't burn down and people who don't use libraries and people
who don't use bikepaths and parks and botanic gardens and planetariams etc
    etc are ripped off.
That's how it works when you elect to be part of a community.

  10. I got the impression that the difference in traffic systems in the 15
years I'd seen were a deterrent attempt. I was on a video shoot for
Boags up and down the East Coast and any of my fees were paid for me,
and I couldn't cart all the camera gear around with me on public
transport. At the same place near the Opera House, one of the Boags
sales reps parked on a half hour street meter, one of the few. It took
us 35 minutes to get the shots we wanted and we got back to her car to
find a ticket. I can't recall the fine but it was pretty insane . . .

I have no children and I'm really sick of paying taxes which are then
spent on hospitals, schools and other facilities which benefit children
who pay no tax at all and provide no benefit to me, and worst of all,
tax concessions and rebates to other tax payers who do have children.
    Fucking freeloaders.

  12. Now do you see what alcohol does to you ?

Hits your pocket, no matter what you do.

  13. Nah - hit their pocket. Plus they paid me $12000 to do it. Alcohol
wins. Hey - I got paid to fly around Australia with a video camera,
all costs covered to get shots of every single Boags personnel in the
country. For instance, I was forced onto a Qld beach and had to find a
cute girlie on the beach who wanted to drink a Boags Premium while I
got shots of her doing it. It's a shit, but I guess someone has to do
    it.

Perth has CAT (Cetral Area Transport) buses which circle the city and
outlying carparks and are free. Paid for by the State Gov't.

years, and then expect a free ride from then on. Bastards!

So who paid for your education?

Sound like a fair system, in Brisbane the Brisbane ratepayer shoulders the
load for Bus Transport if the State Government stepped up to their
responsibilities and provided a public bus system for South East Queensland
the system would be a lot fairer and cover a much larger proportion of the
    population.

The expansion of the commuter rail system would not hurt either.

I said a while ago, that the Vic Government could and should make all public
    transport free.
They already subsidise the rail and tram networks to some fantastic sum and
if they further subsidise them to include free rail, tram and bus services,
then more people would travel on them, relieving the congestion on the
    roads.
They would also not have to employ ticket staff, spend millions of dollars
on a ticketing system which has refused to start up and is going to break
down every week, therefore, the money saved there, would counteract the
    money spent in subsidisation.
