When their constituency is prime commuter-belt, yes. Just like many of
the people they represent manage to do much more often than MPs have to.

If they live further away, out of commuting distance (I've worked in
central London with people who commuted in daily from as far as Swindon &
Stamford) then - sure - provide accommodation. I don't see why the MPs
should make a profit out of that accommodation, though.

It all comes down to what is defined as work, in the context of being an
MP. As has been said many times, it is not a regular job and trying to
shackle it with parameters from commerce is not going to work.

    @news.zen.co.uk:

    That's a concept I could support. There's a perfectly good building just
across the road that could be converted for the purpose. Stripping out all
the gold & other artefacts should raise enough dosh to keep the place
    running for a few years.

I didn't say that. My position is that they establish a time for an
activity to start and base all the regular activities around core
business hours of 8-6, like people do in the real world. If something
exceptional comes along then sure, work through until no later than
10PM, rest, pick it up early the next day, then finish when said
activity is complete, at which point they could return to their
offices, catch trains back to their constituencies, or whatever,
commuting by trin wouldn't even be dead time as they can do their
writing up, sending letters, or whatever they do in terms of admin.
    It's called time management.

Anyhow it appears they finish in the commons at 10:30PM, which by my
reckoning leaves at least an hour and a half of public transport if
they're from within greater london, so I'm unconvinced anyone from
inside the M25 absolutely should need a second home.

I'm up at 0530 every day, some days up to an hour earlier.

That all very much depends on one's job, methos of payment and earning
potential. My earnings are uncapped, so if I want to do more calls and
earn more money I can call in for more jobs and work for as long as
there's still enough daylight to see the places I visit. This doesn't
always happen, but on a slow money week I'll maybe do one or two long
days to boost the bank account somewhat.

The work I do doesn't warrant long hours, but the money does.

    A difference to what?

Maybe I'm just cynical having worked my whole life in IT (worse, IT
for Financial Services), but I don't think anything I've ever done has
    "made a real difference".

But not enough for either of your employers to employ enough to people
to do the work in a reasonable length of working day.

Just stick a couple of percentage points on the tax rate and I'm sure
    that could be resolved.

I've always worked in IT too... Apart from a brief stint running a powder
    paint plant.

I sort of agree - but so much of the work I am doing at the moment would
be very hard to share between two people as it's all tied together and
it's my job to understand the strands of it and keep it all on track.
Not saying that what I do is important to anyone (except me probably) but
if it's not done right patient care will be affected.

Of course, it might not be improved all that much if I do it right once
    the next govt gets in.

not precisely, but there was mention of soldering a connection the other
    day.

I worked in electronics as a technician. I can solder to a very competent
standard. However, I delegated repairs to skilled workers trained in those
particular skills. It was more important for me to find the faults and then
work with the production engineers to ensure those defects were not
    replicated.

Does Bee need to do her own soldering, admin, ordering of spares etc?
Almost every job can be broken down into elements which can be outsourced.

The danger is that you'd turn the clock back a century and only have
people with independent wealth (or union sponsorship) able to stand for
Parliament. And I am not sure that would be a good thing.
