Bollocks to that, my tax bill is high enough as it is so she can work
    a few extra hours.

I'm a union member so that has an influence but a lot of it is that we
don't want to be seen as being scabs.

They work more than 14 hours in the office and commute? I don't think
    so.
I don't agree with them making money out of house prices increasing
but how would you feel if they banged in a claim because the value of
    their second home had dropped?

You can't honestly expect them to do 14 hour days (1), pay for
accommodation closer to work and then swallow the loss if the resale
    value has dropped.

    (1) Even if it's only rarely.

You did say that they could finish at 10pm and be back in by 8am.
So if they finish at 10:30pm and travel home what time do you think
    they should resume work?

Have a look at the working time directive and see what time they're
supposed to return. It isn't 8am btw.

As a colleague remarked to me a quite while back following some
bullcrap about saying late and all pulling together. It's not like
we're surgeons with a patient on the table, worst that happens if we
go home is the schedule slips.

Indeed I did. I didn't say what time they'd finish the following day,
or that they'd work 8 AM to 10PM every day.
At a normal start time - the working late should be made an exception,
for extreme circumstances, cut some of the faff and ceremony out if it
    eats into productive time.
The only thing I remember about the working time directive is it's
averaged over several weeks (is it 14? I forget), so the odd day here
and there didn't make any difference at all. At least that was my
experience when I was on call and hadn't opted out, no doubt you're
going to tell me I've missed a trick though and if I was called out at
3AM as happened more than I liked then I shouldn't have worked the
    following day, or something.

That's not what I think at all. the career politician breed would FRO into
something more lucrative leaving nominations for ordinary folk who care. If
you are being paid average wage, which is in reality a lot more than the
majority earn, with full expenses and London accomodation provided, it would
be interesting. I think it would interest small business types too.

    Might encourage younger MP's too.

  11. Gawd, no. They do enough damage already. Can you imagine what the result
of that lot sitting around with loads of time on their hands would be in
a place whose sole purpose is to create legislation?

Ah but I have a cunning plan. No root vegetables but for every new law they
have to get rid of an existing one.

If I had my time over, I think I'd have become an architect, or at
least a civil engineer, so that there were some things left behind that
    I had my hand in.
    Yuck.

    There's a minimum rest time between shifts. It's either 11 or 13
hours, can't remember or be arsed to google which.

    I just checked..

"The rights to breaks apply differently to you if:

you have to travel a long distance from your home to get to work
you constantly work in different places making it difficult to work to
    a set pattern
you are doing security or surveillance-based work
you are working in an industry with busy peak periods, like
    agriculture, retail or tourism
there is an emergency or risk of an accident
the job needs round-the-clock staffing (such as hospital work)
you are employed in the rail industry and you work on board trains or
your activities are irregular or linked to seeing that trains run on
    time
In these cases, instead of getting normal breaks, you are entitled to
'compensatory rest'. This is rest taken later, ideally during the same
or following working day. The principle is that everyone gets a
minimum 90 hours rest a week on average. This is the total of your
entitlement to daily and weekly rest periods, although some rest may
    come slightly later than normal."

I'd suggest MP's fall under the category "you constantly work in
different places making it difficult to work to a set pattern" and in
many cases "you have to travel a long distance from your home to get
    to work".
