Wel, the value of the property must have risen, otherwise they
wouldn't be able to make a profit, would they?

So either they invested their own money to improve it and raise its
value, or demand for housing in that area rose.

If demand rose then are you saying that it's entirely the "buy to let"
market that pushed up prices, or a good old-fashioned housing
    shortage?

If the latter, then the problem is either down to social change,
perhaps families spreading out or shifts in available work; or simple
    overpopulation.

Reminds me of an alleged encounter between an early mass trespas
'rambler' on Kinder Scout and Lord whoever the owner.

    Along the lines of:
Lord X: "You can't walk here I own this land."
Rambler: "Who did you get it from?"
    Lord X: "My Father."
Rambler: "Who did he get it from?"
    Lord X: "His Father."
    Rambler: "And him?"
    Lord X: "His Father."
    Rambler: "And ?"
Lord X: "He fought Lord Y for it."
Rambler: "OK, take your jacket off and I'll fight you for it."

I'm not sure I quite understand this philosophy. It's a bit like two people
working for different wages then pooling the sum and sharing everything
50/50. It doesn't account for what the jobs are (brain surgeon and dish
washer), Of course, the argument is always "We need dishwashers as much, if
not more then, brain surgeons" but it's not an argument I subscribe to,
given the difference in education needed. One takes years of no wage
    studying, while the other..
Maybe it'd be better if the landlord bought the house and rather than let it
out, let it rot away so he lost all him money and didn't have a chance of
making a profit, buying another house, and letting it out?

Buying up public affordable housing stock,
It's called "Making a living" or "Earning a crust". Some people charge an
hourly/monthly/ rate for their efforts, other choose to buy something, rent
it out and then sell it to "Earn their crust". The weekly rental costs
aren't as profitable as many people think they are or want them to be, (very
UNprofitable in many cases) so the profit comes after a property is sold.
Usually that period is ~7 years, because house prices tend to double in that
time. That could mean a profit on a house bought 7 years ago for 30 grand of
only slightly over 4 grand a year less costs needed to keep the property in
decent condition. And let's not forget any interest that 4 grand would earn
by other means were it not tied up in the property.
What IS the difference if the landlord uses his profits to buy another
    property to let out?

Don't get me wrong, in the grand scheme of things
No-one ever made another person rent a house. It was always the renters
choice, so I can't see how anyone is shat on JUST because the landlord my
sell a property in the future and earn his living by doing so. Provided
no-one is thrown OUT of a property in order to sell, then everything is
running in a perfectly capitalist way.
    I didn't unfortunately.

That's the extreme end of the
SOME private landlords yeah, but like I said before, you're tarring all
landlords with the same brush and it's just the "bad" one's you seem to have
a problem with, not *all* landlords.

    So bollocks to 'em.
I take it you rent and are reasonably happy with the arrangement?
Parental inheritance? That's a cop-out if ever there was, but you make it
sound like a god given right, but waiting for the oldsters to die so you can
profit from their death seems a little selfish to me. My parents inherited
their house off their kids (me) before anyone died, because we bought it for
them, so they didn't have to worry about houses/mortgages/rent. As it should
be. When they died, they didn't have anything of any real (monetary) value
to leave us because we'd encouraged them to spend everything on themselves.
    ..
we'll be old enough that we should have things like this
I think they were a fucking GREAT idea :)

    The middle classes did, yes.
    [/QUOTE]
My grandparents managed to buy their place on a BR cabinet makers
wages. That was with 4 children below working age and no second wage
coming in. They moved from Derby because wages were higher in Bedford
and they had a better chance of being able to buy a property.

I probably need to add that they kept an allotment and that supplied
all the vegetables plus my grandfather was more than able to snare
rabbits and use them to help feed the family.

    Hardly middle class.

    Gah!

The quote from 'me' wasn't from me but from dwb..........

That's been snipped out from the reply I sent to him where OE fucked up and
didn't get the attributes in properly, but where I made it clear which bit
was mine.... Now I wonder who might have misquoted me like
    that..............?

    Define middle class.

My paternal grandfather bought a house [1] in Handsworth some time
between 1905 and 1914 AFAIK. He was in to grow your own, and kept
chickens. Not much chance of snaring rabbits in Handsworth even by then
I suspect. He was a postman [2]. Only three children though.

Maternal grandfather also had a house in Handsworth. A large twenties
semi. He was a locksmith/tool maker [3] with Cheneys, but by the time he
got this house he might have been at least partly 'management', because
he looked after the keys for the works just across the road.

[1] Still standing and in surprisingly good nick when I visited it
recently on an ancestor tracing trip to Brum.
[2] Definitely class 'D' at least today. Possibly not in 1914?
    [3] Trickier. D or C1?
