Bring on the repossessions

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by ogden, Jan 11, 2007.

  1. Ok this has puzzled me for a while, given that the UK is one of the few
countries in Europe obsessed with home ownership, how do people cope
with renting once they retire and their income drops dramatically?

I owe ?30k on cards, but that's just from playing the balance transfer
game & the money to clear them's sat in the savings account I
    transferred it to.

I put virtually everything on another card which gets cleared every
month by DD, so have no debts other than the mortgage. However that
card has eaten up over ?6k with the last two statements, which combined
with the depressingly large tax bill I have to pay this month, means
I'll have either more debts in the very near future, or a re-mortgage.
    As you say, Ho hum.

    In communiqué <>, mike.
In France do you mean? Good question. Given that property prices are
generally lower (outside Paris) presumably so are rents. See also Wavy's
bit about difficulty in repossessing. Perhaps they all just stop paying
and sit tight. I suspect France may have some kind of means tested
    housing benefit system.

Well, as we're no doubt soon to find out, it's the licence fee
settlement, rather than the prevailing economic climate, that dictates
    how things go at Auntie.

If you're betting on an economic downturn and mass unemployment, I
reckon you need to be looking at the commercial broadcasting sector -
QVC and price-drop.tv spring to mind ...

Err, you mean a shortage of affordable houses to buy, which isn't
    quite the same thing.

In the context of a (sub)thread about being able to afford to buy, it is
    the same thing.

My daughter and her husband did not earn enough to get a big enough
mortgage round here. First they bought a shared-equity flat, but did
not like the lack of control that the housing association imposed.
Then they moved up to Yorkshire, where they could afford to buy a
house on their earnings. That meant moving away from family and
friends completely, and was dependent on working for national chains
that allowed them both to transfer thair jobs. Not easy, nor
    undertaken lightly.

My grandparents all owned their houses from 1950 or so. My parents
bought their first house in 1950 also. Having done research into this
as part of my dissertation, ownership rather than rental first became
massiveley popular on the big new estates built in the 1930s or so.

That isn't always the case. I could have opted for an account with
potentially higher returns but that meant I could have lost 15K. What I
have is a guaranteed 7% income plus inflation matching capital growth,
however, the fund has been doing well.

  17. We have a wonderful system here. If I give you my bank details, you can
take what the hell you want. If I then decide you shouldn't have, I
simply phone the bank and they give it back. And nobody signs anything!

  18. I might have to do some brain-picking. I have several 100k's earning
less than 5%. However, safety is the key factor. I don't want to have to
go back to work. Work smells of wee.
