  1. I'd no wish to frighten the poor damn matelots.

The neat thing was that every single boat or ship got a proper welcome -
even the conscripted car ferries and the craft that came in to harbour in
the middle of the night. FiL lived on the top floor of one of the tower
blocks on Gosport seafront, and we got some superb views and photos. I've a
pic of a Harrier hovering at my eye height, IYSWIM.

I don't believe that the money is a factor, because everyone knows that
the army provide accommodation and food which sort of compensates. The
fact that they get screwed as they have to pay for food and
accommodation is, IMO, not very well known when people join up.

And they love letting the world know which regiment he serves with and
whereabout (exactly) he'll be posted. Clever these MOD blokes.

My favourite game in Indian restaurants is to pocket the initial bill
they put on the table. At least 50% of the time the waiter goes
ballistic (1) and demands it back "for their records". I'm not sure
how they work it but apparently a lot of the restaurant owners are on
some kind of VAT scam and they like to use two different books of
    receipts.

    (1) One Indian restaurant in Rye was a classic. The waiter tried to
stop me leaving the place even though a group of us had paid and left
a decent tip. The restaurant in question is about 25 yards from the
police station and while I was having a row in the restaurant my
friends were fetching a copper to watch the fight break out.

Good grief woman, there's tonnes of it with you mentioned. Do you ever
    go outside?

I can't find a picture so I'm going to assume less of the Jo Brand but
more of the blind cobblers thumb ;)

Have I missed something, or has someone actually said that being a soldier
is wrong? I thought the comment that drove a wild hair up your arse was
simply that "Historically, that's where the forces have drawn their
personel" or some such, meaning (I'm assuming) the not bright enough to see
all the adverts are spin and shite and what they're really signing up for is
    to get shot at.

Steve, I really thought you had some sense and decency. And RSMs in the
My uncle Jim was and he as an RSM in the Coldstream Guards.
Too late for me, its tomorrow now.

Now you know as well as the rest of us that this is just some come on
designed to bring Abdul out into the open to attack them but I do wonder
if the Ragheads are really that stupid as to fall for it but then
judging by the reactions I have seen here and elsewhere from apparently
    educated types I do wonder.

It still does in parts of this country.

My youngest wants to join the paras because his employment prospects
in Lossiemouth are fucking close to zero unless he wants to be a
    trolley collector at Asda.

I think that rather proves the point Champ has been making.

It is, apparently, a standard VAT scam in the restaurant trade and I
have no idea how it works either.

  20. Scary, innit. There's quite a bit around things like South Yorkshire Plod,
    too.
OK, do a google Images on Telefantastique. There's a bad shot of my back
    view. :)
