My thoughts entirely. How anyone could even think of taking a commission
in the RAF is beyond me, it's only the officers of that service who are
in the thick of it when bullets are flying.

I did. I ate loads of chocolate, lost two pounds, bought a bike, and now
    I'm up for a FOT.

Everyone's a winner, so long as they're me.

It closed a good 6 years or so ago. At the time, it was full of goths,
    so probably for the best.

With a name like "Auvache" it's quite surprising.

Nah, his parents came to England with William the Conqueror.
Just after mine moved to Norway.

Not parents but some freebooting bandit who was given lands and the
title of Baron d'Ovach for his help to Wills. Got a coat of arms and
    everything we have.

A couple of hundred years later, so the story[1] goes, both lands and
tile were taken away and the then ex-Baron was forced to live in exile
as a commoner back in frogland when it turned out we were not as loyal
to the Brits as we should have been.

In 16 hundred and something, following the revocation of the Edict of
Nantes what gave freedom of religious worship to all froggies, my
ancestors, who were prossies, fled the murdering papist revolutionary
hordes and settled for a new life as working class immigrant scum in the
    East End of London.

The rest, as they say, is history.

[1] The bit from the 1600's onwards is verifiable, the rest is just some
bollox invented by a shyster posing as a genealogist to separate a
snobbish Great Aunt from a large slice of her inheritance some 60 odd
years ago. Vanity is a terrible thing when you have the money.

I do like the story of a young airman who discovered what the Rodneys
    get paid:

Young Airman: "S'not fair Sarge, they get paid a lot more than us!"
Grizzled Old Sergeant: "Nah son, not more. Just faster..."

    boot him out!"
"Are you sure about that Major Smith?"
"Definitely sir! He's no use to man nor beast"
"I think, Captain Smith, that we may need to reconsider"
"Err... No sir! I am resolute on this. He has to go!"
"I see, Lieutenant Smith. Nothing I can say will change your mind?"
"Umm... Sir! No sir! He's a danger to his men!".
"Well, Second Lieutenant Smith, if that's your considered opinion..."
    "It is sir!"
"Very well then Sergeant Smith. Report to Mr Wales's unit for latrine
    duty."

Absolutely. And, had we taken up the offers, and stayed the duration,
imagine where we'd be now with 13 years seniority.

<thinks>......probably still in that fetid bunker, but with the
probabilty our employers had had their SOE85 notifications at least
    once.

    Wodneys.

    Allegedly
