My mother did. She was about 10 before she got a pair of shoes that
weren't pre loved. She lived in squalor too and they were comparatively
well off for east end working class scum by the standards of the times.
It goes a long way to explaining why even today she has a bigger shoe
collection than Emelda Markos. It leaves it's mark does poverty.

With your dodgy back I would have thought standing for anything was
something to be carefully thought about, or are you a feeling better.

I think you're forgetting the fact that Champ is allowed to have an
opinion. You don't have to agree with it.

Ok so your father did, big fucking deal so did millions of others, the
whole world in fact which is why it was called a World War. Mine damn
near froze to death under the command of an incompetent chinless wonder
in the North Atlantic. So fucking what, they did what they thought was
right at the time and glory be because of it I didn't have to do the
    same.

No of course not, that is what Other Ranks are for.

Step away from the trees for a moment and you just might see the forest.
Not at all, just making the point that yours is not the only, nor
necessarily the correct view of what for most around here is ancient
history and be fair all you have is opinions handed down to you by
someone who's mind has been washed as clean as it can be by the system.

Don't blame the Navy or the MoD. Blame the French.

  8. Oh, that it does - as does being brought up when credit wasn't easily
available, if at all. We weren't poor when I was a child, but I well recall
only having school shoes, play shoes and best shoes. I'm another Imelda. :)

Really? Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia which kicked out the Khmer
Rouge, January 7 1979 - General election UK May 3 1979. So that would
have been Jim Callahan as PM during the Khmer regime, not Maggie.

  10. He didnt' exactly start as an RSM.
Actually, no, I don't. And by the time I was born my father had been a
civilian for, what, six years or more?

My father hardly ever talks about his war in a military sense, other than in
a rather detached way at times. He tells a lot of rather rowdy and funny
anecdotes. I know rather more about my mother's war. I have talked to many
of that generation, with many different views. I've read contemporaneous
accounts, and other histories ranging from Orwell though Churchill to A J P
Taylor. And the war poets as well.

Pa is totally and utterly opposed to the Iraq/Afghanistan mess, fwiw.

If talking about the past, I'd have agreed with you almost 100%.
However you need to look at the level where people are going in.
Officer candidates, in general, will choose to join the forces as a
career (As opposed to grunts where your point will be much more
relevant). I think historically this may have always been the case (or
    very close to it).

IMO the idea of those going into the forces, because they can't get a
job is much less relevant today than it ever was in the past. In fact
ITYF that the idea of joining in this day and age is far less likely
because of issues such as fighting in un-just wars, not wanting to get
    killed, etc.

  13. OK, let's try this again. I find your opinion repugnant. But that happens.

Your bullying is a separate issue and is wholly unacceptable anywhere. THAT
is out of order. If I worked with you, say, and you attempted this sort of
thing, I would call you out on it. Publically. I do the same here.
That is not what I said. I did not decline.

BY the way, I had a really nice date yesterday. It was a date cut in
half with a dash of cream in the middle with half a walnut on top. The
date wasn't at all sticky and wasn't too sweet. In fact the cream quite
    complemented it.

Sorry, but I don't know where the date came from. I was in Bologna,
Italy, if that gives you a clue as to the origin of the date.

I doubt that the first two points come into the minds of people
    applying for the army.

  16. Oh, he can hold whatever opinion he likes, however repugnant I find it. I am
opposed to censorship - for example, I don't think you should try and
silence people like that mad mullah jobbie. I will reserve the right to
respond to an opinion in strong terms.

I do have a problem with someone trying to drive me away or silence me.
    That's bullying.

I would imagine most folk who elect to undergo such training would use
a similar phrase, without any intention of broaching the subject of
    funding.
Condescension doesn't really suit you, you know.
