If my old man was anything to go by (Aden, Libya, NI, Germany,
Christmas Island, God help us), you're exactly right.

  4. I don't quite see your conflation there, but here's why I used the term.
There are many people who are robust, shall we say, on Usenet who would not
behave in the same way if they met people face to face. If I encounter
someone who is behaving in a way I find objectionable I will say so,
regardless of where this happens. So, *if* I met you face to face and you
tried to bully me, I would call you out on it. See?

Thats why you like biking, isn't it... With a helmet on, no-one need
    ever know...

I think you'll find the modern army is somewhat not like that...

  8. Fair enough. And I'm not implying you're a wuss in RL, just for clarity.

  10. Quite. Parents were buying their own home, so I suppose we were some sort of
vague middle class. Classic thing of not much material show, but no debts
other than the mortgage. And a fair overlay of waste not, want not, whuich
has stuck with me. But I do have a serious shoe addiction. You may point and
laugh now, or otherwise shake heads - at the last count, it was about 160
    pairs.
    Dvorak New World playing here?

    Are they all Dr Martens?

  12. Nice bait, but we've had this conversation before. I don't do Sensible
Shoes. In any sense of the word.

I don't think I know *anyone* who wears DMs... a tad passé, imo. Although,
they were favoured by the tonic suit mob at school.

No, I'm a Choo and Blahnik gurl, me. For style, anyhow.

When I was a kid I never had gloves, so I make up for it now by having
something like 14 pairs of bike gloves and a few pairs of wooly ones.

When I was a kid, we were lower middle [1], and I had two pairs of
shoes, school/best and play. Maybe even only one. I think I own four
pairs now, including bike boots, which is a record.

[1] Now, obv, I'm king of the fucking world.
