But of course you 'know all about' empathy ...

    Right ?

Well, no. It might be good for a free pint or two, and a sympathy shag
    from the barmaid, though.

Whereas if you walked into a pub where you knew a lot of the people (to
extend the oft-quoted analogy on here) and someone replied, 'it's only a
brother', then that person might well require an unscheduled visit to
    his dentist the next day.

Actually, I think you're muddling the analogy here. Ukrm is compared
to a pub and it's implicit that most people know the regulars, so when
a regular gets a kick from fate, there is sympathy. If a complete
newbie barged into ukrm, or a pub, and announced a bereavement, then
the result would be as you suggest.

Not quite. I think the analogy still works.

I'm a regular here, as is Steve but we've never met. I'm a regular in
my local pub, and there are other regulars there whom I've also never
    met.

If one of them stood up in the middle of the pub, requested quiet and
announced a bereavement[1], although I would be civil & polite to them,
I wouldn't necessarily feel the need to offer 'sincere' condolences.

[1] Or even just came up to me personally and said it.

    I don't see why it's difficult to understand. I consider people I
interract with on the Internet (& who I like) to be friends, regardless
of whether or not I've met them in real life.
Which is fair enough, & probably what lots of people do. However when a
friend of mine died last year, his wife & children were overwhelmed by
the public response in a thread similar to this. It made them realise
how liked he was by how many people, which made them even more proud to
    have been his family.

I know it's different in this case as it's not the dyee receiving the
condolences, but just as a general point, these threads can & do help
the family, regardless of whether the messages are truly sincere or not.

I've not met Steve but he's a regular poster and seems a decent enough
chap. That's good enough reason for me to empathise with what must be
a terribly sad situation for fellow biker and UKRMer.

Normally I agree, and never add my congrats to baby, birthday or
similar posts, but this one, despite never having met Steve, just hit
    home somehow.

Funnily enough, I thought the same way.

Take the post that's up there somewhere about some Merkin kid in an
accident. No one gave a ****. Especially because it happened on the
    other side of the pond.

Steve's post is just different somehow. Maybe it's because we do know
Steve (albeit in a virtual medium).

Likewise, added to which posts along the lines of "it's only a..."
"any spares going?" & "what's his wife like?" have become a bit tired
    and boring.

Actually I disagree on that last point. Admittedly most tasteful folks
would have waited a day or so, but I think it behoves us all to fight
    the slipping standards of ukrm.

Don't get me wrong, a funny, tasteless remark would've been perfect.
The perceived slipping standards of UKRM are more down to the fact
that the same old memes are being dragged out by lazy posters trying
    too hard to be shocking.
