    I remember a Police presentation when I was a schoolchild (6th form) - we
were shown images of drug deaths/suicides/murders all with the permission of
relatives, I suppose it's just a question of morals as to whether you bother
    with the permissions...

I've just read his attempted justification in his blog.

It's moved me to write to the NW Police Authority. Not that I suppose
that'll make a blind bit of difference, they seem to be inured to the
    man's insanity.

Actually, having read his justification - it makes complete sense. This was
not an open meeting - but was being attended by a select few who were warned
in advance about what they were going to be shown. I cannot see any
difference between this and between police officer training sessions where
recruits are exposed to the very same thing. Brunstrom would have known that
none of those attending the presentation were related to the deceased and,
as they were sworn to confidentiality, there would have been no distress
caused to NOK because they would not have known that the pictures were being
viewed. It was only because some idiot from the press decided he wanted his
name in lights that this came to notice.

The fact is that police and hospital files are full of pictures of
fatalities and serious injuries and those pictures are very frequently used
during presentations to various types of audience for very valid reasons.
They are *not* released for general public viewing and that is as it should
    be.

OK, so sack the man for being too fucking naive to be a CC.

Bearing in mind that he specifically requested those present at this
presentation *not* to discuss the specifics of the presentation outside of
the meeting, this seems a hardly fair criticism in this instance?

What possible reason - other than "publicity" - could he POSSIBLY have to
get a bunch of journos in a room for a presentation...? Bear in mind that
the usual term for a presentation to journos is a "press conference"...

I cannot see that it is naive to expect responsible adults attending a
serious presentation to act like responsible adults, do you?

I just wonder whether you would have been as outraged if the subject of this
issue was not a biker with an anti-police message on his T-shirt?

The publicity desired was in relation to the road safety campaigns being
undertaken by his force - not some 'shock horror headless torso' story.

    Yes.

Would you be happy to see the body of an overdose victim used - without the
permission or knowledge of the family - in a press conference against drug
    dealing?

We won't even go into the fact that there's massively greater correlation
in the latter instance than the former.

I've already pointed out that it is not in the slightest bit unusual for
photographs of fatalities and serious injuries to be used in all sorts of
presentations to varied audiences - and without the permission of NOK. Such
photographs are used regularly during police training for example. Why
should that be any different to an audience containing members of the
press - providing those attending (as they were in this case) are requested
to maintain confidentiality in relation to the specifics?

I was a Divisional Press Liaison officer on a number of postings, and
journalists are often told about matters 'off the record'. I was never let
down for the simple reason that journalists know which side their bread is
buttered on. If they betray a confidence - then they wont be confided in
again and will lose that early access to upcoming stories.

The story here is not that accident photographs were shown to a limited
audience - but that one member of the press betrayed a confidence.

    I don't think so.........
I think the reporter in question will be the one who will be sorry. It is
highly unlikely that he will given any 'off the record' briefings from now
on because he will be regarded as untrustworthy.

If anything, he's got more publicity than he was hoping for - and _all_ of
it related to the road safety campaigns being undertaken by his force.

You'd think he'd be happy, wouldn't you? After all, there's no such thing
    as bad publicity, right?

I would suggest that they were simply local newspaper hacks - the type who
attend police stations every morning for briefings by the Divisional Press
Liaison officers. The type who know that if they want to be kept in the
circle they do not print 'off the record' briefings. The one who who has
obtained brief fame for printing this story may well live to regret it
because the police do not *have* to brief journalists on police matters.

You think Brunstrom's Bright Boys will be able to figure out whodunnit?

I'd say that if he (or she) had the sense not to break a speed limit on
the way home, they've got nothing to worry about (cf. NWP's crime
    clearup rates).

  20. Oi, a few times this last week I've gone to post only to check the

nicking my lines or you'll be hearing from my script writer.

    Now, time to dance.
