  2. Just in case anybody missed this bit :

"Mrs Pickering said she was upset by the police who visited her shop,
claiming they had threatened to arrest her if she went outside"

  3. Of course it is ever so slightly less emotive if you provide the full
quote. Only slightly mind but it makes enough of a difference.

One of those interminable "get a camera, follow a cop, make cheap TV"
programmes was on the box recently featuring the finest from Surrey.
This, in case anyone is interested, is the force that had two officers
facing a rape charge not long ago. It's also the force that promised to
protect a relative of mine if they gave evidence in a criminal case and
then did **** all when the enraged criminal turned up on their doorstep
threatening the witness, their family and screaming they were going to
burn the house down around the family's ears.

Anyway, this bunch of policing lightweights were shown picking up people
fairly randomly on the streets of Guildford. They then sat them in a
police car and just plain lied to them about the reasons for them being
picked up and about their rights. The voiceover for the film stated that
the police knew they were lying through their teeth but were abusing the
law in order to extract a confession. The commentator gave the
impression this was admirable if it brought "a criminal to trial".

  5. It wasn't a verbatim quote of what the police said. I never suggested
it was. It was just a report of a press interview with Mrs P.
Well, true, slightly I grant you, but true.

OTOH The police could have said "if you go outside and remonstrate
with the complainants causing an altercation thereby creating a public
order offence you will be arrested".

But they didn't, did they? And Mrs P had no intention of doing so.

Has this got us any further in knowing what we can and can not put on
display without fear of police officers coming in off the street and
threatening us with arrest for displaying "Mother's Union" type
knitted dolls which they have done for 70 years?

If this is part of your definition of a biker "riding sensibly" I can see
why you see very few of them.

OK, interesting, I defer to your far geater knowledge on the matter - it
was a bloody long time ago for me!

but you selectively snipped the continuation, which read 'to talk to
the complainant' and changes the context significantly.
How do you know? This wasn't a verbatim report, remember.
    Golly, you were there?

john doe () gurgled happily, sounding much like
    they were saying :
But he'd probably be more aware of the eejit, therefore less likely to
    actually hit.

Not in every case, no... In fact, if you're moving *really* slowly,
say < 1mph, avoiding something moving directly towards you can be
    *very* difficult! :)

  12. Kennesaw in Georgia made it compulsory, with exceptions, to have a gun
    and ammunition in ever home.

According to the figures in Kennesaw the crime of burglary dropped over
75% some say higher. In comparison some towns in Illinois have banned
hand guns and the burglary figure have gone up.

Out of interest both say the others schemes are not working.
Those laws were instigated as a knee jerk reaction to make political
capital and have not reduced gun crime.

Similar to the Top Gear "Yankee cars don't do corners". They seem to manage

  17. Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the "Milky Way".

Unlikely since the bullet fired from a rifle will have considerable
rotational KE as well as that derived from its velocity.
