Well, each to his own I suppose. I'm not so sure that the dependents of,
say, a 30 year old would be happy if that person were to die at that age
from taking stupid and unnecessary risks. I enjoy my life to the full and
wish to prolong it for as long as possible. I most certainly do not want to
die prematurely, no matter what I happen to be doing at the time.

    I don't have a Volvo - and I never holiday on bank holidays - I leave those
periods to the workers, poor sods. I fully retired six years ago at age 54
and my wife and I take numerous holidays throughout the year. We came back
from our third holiday of 2007 last Friday (and only one of those 3 was a
    caravan holiday!).

It's a beggar this retirement - hardly have any time to do any
    jobs.................

On that occasion, yes - but you cannot guarantee that that would be the case
on every occasion can you? Unless you are suggesting the faster you go the
less likelihood you have of hitting something that runs/pulls out in front
    of you?

I don't think so. The faster you are travelling the less easy it is to make
dramatic avoiding manoeuvres, and the distance it will take you to stop will
    be longer also.

The fact remains that in such a situation the vehicle's speed is irrelevant.
It's the coincidence of the vehicle and the animal trying to occupy the same
space at the same time that's the problem. Even if the vehicle were
stationary there would still be a collision, unless the animal changed
    course.

As the chap in charge of the Ten Tors event said when deciding to bring the
youngsters off Dartmoor due to extremely bad weather, "There are sensible
risks and there are silly risks".

I don't think the cause of the accident is in dispute, he's saying that the
consequences would in all probability been worse if the car had been
    travelling faster.

  8. Only three holidays and one in a caravan.
Good heavens man, it's the middle of May. That's four and a half months.
If you can't afford to retire early, properly, you should have stayed
    working.

  9. But from your own contributions to this cross posted group you made
statements that meant you could only travel at 8 mph. Remember?

He shouldn't be driving anywhere near 90 mph!

Indeed, but one would need to have good vision of anything approaching
the junction that might be likely to pull out into the main road. If
you can see it's clear and going to remain clear, then no problem.

If it's a blind junction a speed a good deal less than 90 mph (or even
60 mph) might be more prudent.

    Best wishes all,
    Dave.

I've told my kids that when I go they can just wrap me up in a bin-liner and
drop me in a wheelie bin somewhere. They didn't think much of the idea I'm
afraid! I'm not one for funerals - they take place several days after the
death and just when people are starting to recover - it's all dragged up
again. I'm a militant atheist as well so the religious aspect just turns my
stomach. There will be no priest lining his pockets at *my* funeral. I think
it's disgusting that priests actually charge for conducting funerals - that
should be one of their inclusive pastoral duties when one of their flock
dies. It's all a load of superstitious mumbo jumbo anyway!

But it isn't safe to do so because other drivers are not expecting it and
therefore may act in the belief that you are travelling much slower. That
may well be the fault of the other driver - but driving at 90 mph and
expecting that all other drivers are capable of accurately judging your
speed is foolhardy in the extreme.

In judging whether a particular speed is safe or not you cannot simply rely
on your own skill and the state of the road - you have to take account of
the possible careless actions of other motorists.

Then whilst he can certainly blame the other driver for misjudging his
speed, he must also blame himself for relying on the competence of other
drivers when deciding to drive at such a speed. In practice, of course, at
that speed on a bike, he would probably be blaming no-one.

Nevertheless that - and indeed much higher speed - is what police
drivers often do, and please don't point out that they do it in fully
marked cars with all the bells and whistles etc., because they are not
    always in hi-viz cars.
Quite right, and doing that is part of your own skill set.

    Best wishes all,
    Dave.

Exactly right Kev. Graveyards are for the living not the dead and are a
    complete waste of space.
