I am moving on monday from the bungalow to a specially adapted G/F flat
suitable for her indoors. The move is nicely scheduled to take place
while she is away on respite care. So a week ago I ordered a phone
line and some broadband. No problem I thought, should be working
    before I move.

I now have an order confirmation - 6 January FFS.
What are they doing ?, laying a new cable all the way from the exchange ?.
Looks like I will be a bit scarce on the net for a bloody month.

    Grrrrrrrrrr.

I'm struggling to see a downside to this.

You could always go to your local PC World and buy a pay as you go USB
modem but I suppose that'd be too difficult.

I already have a Voda PAYG dongle but it is sloooow and the signal is
crap at the new flat. Reminds me of the early days on a 9600 modem.

or play the spaz card and get the installation prioritised. Local social
services may have a contact in the local BT office, rather than going
    through the Bengali call centre.

Luxury! I remember moving up from 110 baud to 300 - that really rocked.

You may find that 02 or 3 have better, faster coverage: that's certainly
the case at my mum's house where o2 is at last ten times faster than
    Vodafone.

Vodafone are simply dire and should have their licence taken off them.

    Quite.

That reminds me, an OTA update for my Desire popped up the other day and
I postponed it. Need to ask our tame Vodafone handset monkey whether
it's going to do anything useful or just turn the phone into a pile of
    shit again.

I installed it (about 10 days ago) - no Vodafone branding or apps. Seems
to be simple updates, I noticed there's now a slide out "menu" on the
paper clip icon to attach various things (pictures, calendar items,
    contacts etc) to text messages.

Don't know if I hadn't noticed it previously or it was a part of the
    recent update.

I've always found them pretty good as a service provider - just not
particularly good at paying tax and living up to their social
    responsibilities.

They do seem to have accepted their business responsibilities by
offering to sell customers boosters so they can get a signal in their
    homes.

That was on the original 2.2 update.

Only change I've noticed so far on the latest one is a new main screen
on the Facebook app. Other than that, same old same old. Checked the VF
forums before installing and there were no obvious nasties.

We have a T-mobile one, about £20 from tesco IIRC and it's very good
in strong areas and useable with barely any signal showing on the
    mobiles.

I always seem to get a good signal. Orange, O2 and Three in Hampstead
(the highest point in London FFS) seemed to be total non-runners,
Vodafone was the only consistent performer.

Which was a shame as I quite liked Orange - no reason why I just liked
the black boxes the phones came in - but that was five years ago now.

I bought a 3 USB dongle a while back based on your recommendation and
it's performed really well so far, also a reasonable price at £30 with
    3GB bundled.

No problem here, and having SFR as their preferred network in France
works pretty well as I usually get a signal at 'the chateau'. Their call
centre seems to be staffed by pleasant people with good communication
skills and even their shops don't seem to be staffed by the sort of
cunts[1] you find in Orange outlets.

[1] Still fuming over the 'dropped phone' incident.

Just out of curiosity, were you sober when you typed this, or is there
a special concoction that puts you in the mood?

I suspect there may have been a small amount of 'something' consumed.
