Never heard of it. Good, is it?

Well I like it. Has been likened to port. From the med. south of
Perpignan, right on the Spanish border. Based on Grenache and aged in
oak. Looks and tastes a bit like port but not as strong. A vin doux
naturel. There are even some very old grand cru versions. Never seen it
in the UK, but most large French hypers have at least one (probably not
exceptional) example. V. good with mince pies.

Great seeing the look on the face of a supercilious sommelier, when
they find they haven't got one, and are amazed a 'rosbif' knows about
    them.

I agree LBV is nice, it doesn't need to be old. I also like Ruby.

I've never yet tasted a Ruby that has that nice rich warming feel that
you get with vintage or LBV. Can be quite nice to drink cool as an
apertif, which is how the continentals drink it, but as a
British-style after-dinner with stilton drink it's just not up to the
    job.

And don't get me started on American (and other) strong wines that
    call themselves port.

    Why?

I'm not very good with the whole drinks with meals thing - wines I'm ok
with - it's the appertif and afters I struggle with.

Kir - what's the point of that?

I'm quite partial to Pastis; where does that fit in the meal drinking
    scheme?

  7. They are degoutant.
It makes cheap white plonk in to a rather pleasant summer tipple.

Because they don't taste anything like port, and therefore shouldn't
confuse the drinking public by misnaming it so.
Well, one point is to make shite wine taste better, but in fact it
makes a very pleasing apertif. It's about preparing one's pallete for
food - a light, refreshing drink beforehand is a bit like serving
    sorbet between courses.
    It doesn't.

As in she cancelled the account[1] and the direct debit. They then
billed her for the final amount plus extra stuff that shouldn't have
    been on the bill.
Not sure it will, but I'll pass it on anyway - ta.

[1] From reviewing phone bills, this step alone took 11 attempts and 1
and half hours on the phone, spread over two days.

I've only seen one bottle of port in one duty free shop, and it wasn't
particularly a bargain. I think you'd be better off at Tescos.

I wanted to get one as a thankyou gift, but somehow it doesn't seem
right to get a gift with a Tesco label.

    Or instead of.

Speaking of pastis, I was quite pleased with a definition I came up with
    recently.

    Pastiche: One's fourth pastis.

  14. Rutherglen. I passed through once on the bike -- can't remember
why now, it wasn't between any of my usual haunts -- and there was a big
roadside sign: "Sydney has a beautiful harbour, but Rutherglen has a
magnificent port." We used to drink a lot of Rutherglen port[1], in 4 litre
flagons, when I was in the Garran Hall Senior Common Room at ANU.

[1] Morris of Rutherglen, I think.

Er... Pasties; something made out of cow's arseholes?

The only pastis drinkers I've known have been dyed in the wool middle
age alcoholics. Plenty of brits seem to retire to France in order that
they can drink themselves stupid on cheap alcohol... and whine about how
beastly the French really are whilst living in their little isolated
    'brit-in-france' communities.

Erm, I like pastis. And I wouldn't classify myself as an alcoholic. Middle
    age maybe.
Not only the Brits - the Germans have been doing that in Spain, Italy or
    France for a long time.

  18. Hmmm.. LBV (drooling noises off-camera)

I favour Andresons (OK - it's Ruby but it's still nice) and Porto Da
Silva (wonderful LBV - the best port I ever drank!).

Both I got from Laithwaites but the Da Silva doesn't usually arrive
    till nearer Christmas.

  19. Almost every meal I've eaten out in France has started with a pastis -
sort of like a welcome sherry here (for when the guests arrive).

I must admit I like a bit of pastis too - and I'm far from an
    alcoholic.
