Never got stopped for this in the 90s but got stopped several times in the
70s for this. On each occasion I referred them to John Neep, an ex
motorcycle policeman who taught riding skills at the National Safety
Council. A Gov't department which was teaching me not to ride as far left as
    possible.

    I'm on a '00 VTR250.

Problem was, it was a relatively narrow lane, with double solid lines
and oncoming traffic. There was only a small shoulder and gravel on the
left so fairly unsafe for me to try to stop. He had no room to pass
legally and safely and I had no way of letting him through without
coming almost to a stop on the road in a 100kph zone. No win situation
    really.

As much as I see the sense in the "No point being in the right if you
are in the ambulance" theory, it pains me to even consider giving away
my right to use the road to an impatient wanker. If I had been holding
him up for kilometres then I would definetely move off the road once
there was somewhere safe to do it, but he had only been behind me for
    about 500m.

It seems the keep to the right option would be the go. Hopefully, if I
was keeping to the right and the guy was tailgating me, then if there
was a cop around, he would book the guy for tailgating rather than me
for keeping right. Then once the idiot was gone, I could move left again.

Ummmm you haven't been comprehending what you've been told. Don't ride on the
left hand side of the lane unless there's a really good reason for not riding
in the right hand side. You don't have to keep left on a motorcycle.

  7. When the nice policeman took me for my test (waaaaay back) he chipped me
for riding in the right hand wheel track. My pleading "buffer zones" and
"as far left as practical" fell on deaf ears.

Mind you he passed me, albeit with the "just remember to stay to the
    left in future" qualifier.

  8. Too bloody often. Grrrr.

The K decided to have a good lie down while I was in the process of
executing a U-turn on an uphill section of road at crawling speeds,
while Carol and I were doing the annual 'viewing of the christmas
lights'. Bloody top-heavy bastard of a bike.

Nothing like an appreciative audience. lol

Have they changed the law?In Vic when i got my licence it was as far to left
of road as possible. It was also the days when a cop on a bike would follow
you round to get your Ps.

I think you'll find it is "as far left as practible" which is not the
    same thing.

The law in South Oz at least was changed some years ago to specificallyu
exempt motorcycles after an MRA campaign and a court case involving an
injuured biker clipped by a car.
