I have a lad of 10. I was 39 when he was born. That was the point I felt I
could really afford it (1). I never claimed any sort of benefits, never
have, mainly I don't need them but significantly I'm far too lazy to pursue
    them.

My point is about taxation. Don't hand out benefits willy nilly. Taxation is
lower. Everybody benefits. The current structure is insane, no company could
survive thus and UK Inc finances should be run rather like a company.
I'm not anti benefits for those who deserve them. Take people who get laid
off for instance, they get a shit deal and deserve much more support and a
    degree of initial feather bedding.

    (1) which had to include a full time professional, Nanny but that was just
my preference and the principal stands

A short-sighted attitude, but considering your age, not unexpected or
unreasonable. The problem comes when your generation is dead & buried and
Hog's short term solution of making his/my generation work until they are
80 begins to falter. There is going to be a shortage of skilled workers let
alone unskilled ones willing to wipe the arse of my demented shell of a
    body.

Point of order for the dishonourable member. I only observed the inescapable
problem and described an obvious solution.

It's not on anything it wasn't already on, and we're already paying

bankrupt me. My own spending habits are quite capable of doing that
    on their own.

The current mob, like the last lot, seem to be playing ostrich as far as
the community care budget is concerned. Demand is already exceeding
available resources and it's not going to decrease for about 40 years.

Just how big a causal link do you think there is between amount of
    child benefit and birth rate?

I certainly didn't have a kid because it would get me a whole 80 quid
a month. He costs me substantially more than that.

    Well, yeah :)

It really it silly. You have the baby and they just start paying it,
pretty much. 'They' know you've had the kid, so they give you the
    money.

Tax credits is a pain the arse, so much so that I'll not bother
claiming that this year. Mainly because 15 quid a month isn't worth
the form filling. In fact I'm not sure I even qualify now he's over
    one.

But there will need to be a solution. Something inbetween compulsory
euthanasia and full, state funded care.

I imagine a solution will materialise once the baby boomers age a couple of
decades older and decrepitude becomes part of their everyday life. The genX
types will need to come up with suitable bribes to get elected as old
gimmers will be the dominant segment of the electorate.

  18. Good old right wing rant. Why am I paying for everybody else. Let's all
go selfish and see how far it gets us. My immediate decision will be to
stop paying any tax that might fund any expenditure in the county of
    Essex.

As for the budget well I think it's pretty much a shambles but it would
have been regardless of who got in. The fact all the politicians lied
to us during the election and are continuing to lie about the economy
    really makes me very cross.
I do so agree - I really think is essential that I can claim a benefit
from the government for being gay, fat and 45. After all I pay a shit
load of tax and NI every 4 weeks (TfL pay 4 weekly not monthly) so why
can't I get my own dedicated slice of it back?
Go and explain that concept to the Japanese. They have ever such a
small problem with an ageing population and a declining birth rate.

    Your initial post said:
Assuming you don't class yourself as low paid simply leads me to guess
that your son wouldn't need to be supported by the state.

I hope that's cleared things up nicely.

It might not be an issue for 2 reasons.

1 The world is overdue a pandemic.
2 There's typically some kind of major social upheaval at the begining
of every century, be it famine, war, earthquake, whatever..
