Yes, I wondered why the howls of outrage from the Labour benches when it was
    announced. It's bugger all really.

Did your parents receive family allowance benefits when you were a
child and if so why do you assume that those children that are the
recipients of benefits now won't put something back into society when
    they leave school?

They're not all little bastards btw.

I agree with all you say.
I chose not to have kids.
I'm not anti benefits, there are and always will be a tremendous of people
that _genuinely_ need/deserve them. I'm sure there are also a tremendous
amount of people that get them that equally don't deserve them.
I do feel that out of all the benefits available, child benefit has outlived
it's usefulness and has become open to abuse. People that want kids, be it 1
or 10 should be responsible for their actions and consider, like yourself,
all the financial burdens that this incurs.
    It's about being responsible.

You see, I don't find this way of thinking holds water.
Since we have so many people unemployed, and we also have a massive increase
in population there must inevitably be an increase in the potential amount
of skilled workers. There is certainly and increase in the number of benefit
claimants and people that do not want to work. _This_ needs to be addressed.
There is most certainly no shortage of potential available labour!!

Oh and for your information although I have a grey beard, I am in my early
fifties so I'm not in the dead and buried league just yet :)

There's a big difference between a welfare safety net - and giving money
to everybody, even those earning relatively tidy sums, purely because
    they happen to have whelped.
Plenty of people in the world who might be willing to move to Japan and
    help out.

    And probably not then either.
This community care thing is another interesting point of view. What happens
now then with all these people that have had 3 kids (arbitrary number) and
have raised them with the help of the community and child benefit etc.
Surely these kids should now be obliged help with the welfare of their aging
parents? Not expecting society and the "community" to remove the "burden"
(for want of a better term!)?
    Back to this ...responsibility thing!

I truly have no idea. But if the benefit was to be removed, the answer may
well be come quite apparent in the next few years.
I'm merely trying to point out that CB is just one of a number of outdate
    benefits about.
As Hog has pointed out, taxation should be modernised to alleviate all these
    complicated benefits.

Some time back British people decided that looking after old people was not
the responsibility of their offspring. Hence we needed the NHS & Community
Care Act, incidentally one of the last things introduced by Thatcher's
    Conservative government in 1990.

If you want kids to look after their old folk then you will have to get
British people to breed at a faster rate and adopt the values of East
Europeans and Asians. The quickest way to achieve this is through
    immigration.

I don't think you have really thought your position through...

    Gets my vote.
I've got no problem with people claiming child benefit/credits. I do
have a problem with them being _able_ to claim it. Sprogging is a hobby
like any other hobby - people do it because they want to & because it
makes them happy (or they think it will). Why the **** I should have to
subsidise that hobby is beyond me.
I've put plenty in too - why should I have to put even more in to
subsidise you[1], & not be able to get the same back myself?

[1] Generic 'you' - the sproggers.

Paying 100 quid a month in benefits to someone who earns 300k a year
whilst paying nothing to someone way below the poverty line who doesn't
have kids may sound fair to you, but you'll never be able to convince
    me it is.

Quite, Honda's 40% price hike over the last 18 months was okay, but an
extra 2.12% in the new year is a real deal-breaker, and no mistake.
