Righto, tomorrow I'm off to check a 1993 2L diesel Leyland Daf 200 van
    with a view to buying.

    - Common failures?
    - Never had a diesel; what to check?
    - Bodges and signs of abuse?
    - Price?

    Proto racers your transportation awaits...

  2. Just about everything. They are a reasonable workhorse, but do tend to
    wear out.
Leaks. Black smoke. Heater plugs - ease of starting.
    The potential list is endless
Entirely dependent upon condition / history.
£800 for a really good one.

You might want to get an insurance quote (if you can) before handing over
the readies. I know 2 people now who've bought vans only to find out that
their insurers wouldn't touch them if the vans were for private use.
Company/trade use, no problem. Just not as a private vehicle.
    Just a thought.

I've done that, only the one so far - wasn't too bad £190 TPFT or £265 FC
that also includes breakdown/recovery (36y/o, kept on road, Brighton,
    10yrs protected NCB).

Interestingly Carole Nash (who my car was with) won't do vans and have a
hefty cancellation penalty. However, they will waive it if I send a copy
of any new insurance proving it's a vehicle they won't touch.

IIRC she said vans, yanks and kit cars.

I'm led to believe this is very low mileage belonging to a local cabinet
    maker.

So long as it hasn't rotted out.

Should be nicely paneled out inside then.

It is and is now sitting outside my house. £380, v. low mileage (48K),
12 months MOT and a surprisingly 'agile' engine.

No major problems - rear doors are a bit frilly, underside rock solid,
needs a new tyre and unfortunately only has one passenger seat so I'm on
the hunt for a bench type to replace it.

  8. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
I fort the Daf vans of that size used the 2.5 Transit lump; perhaps only
    the heavier ones, though.
