I can't for the life of me work out why he thinks insurance is a
    problem.

Apply now and you might get to do your first test in two or three
    years.

Sadly, when you swap one country's licence for another one the old
licence is returned to the issuing authority, where it is duly
cancelled. So your 'insurance policy' would only be of any possible
use outside the country that issued it, where you're not gonna give a
toss anyway. Try to use it when stopped by UK plod and you're in big
    trouble.

Shouldn't need to, should he? After all the UK is still a member of
Europe (well it was the last time I looked) and it should be a simple
    exchange.

Unless, of course, he wants to have both, as suggested earlier.

My dad a staunch Presbyterian, the son of a Baptist Pastor (who
himself was proud of the fact he'd never been in the Free State) has
been considering a ROI passport simply on grounds of cost. Amazing how
getting old changes your perspective on things.

The Dublin passport office has a steady stream of Samuels and Ivans
getting Irish passports so that they can study for free in Scotland.

What? Oh! No, it's only for driving tests, not a dating agency.

I don't know if they follow the example of the saint and wear sods of
earth on their feet to avoid making contact with the pagan soil.

Thankfully, since the new regulation wrt plates, the staion that supplied
you with yours should've had your V5, your home address and (probably) your
fucking blood type too, so if they got it wrong I see a possible "out" if it
    ever came to light.

I'm not saying it WILL give you an out, but it's a bloody strong argument,
particularly if you can't remember your plate number like me. You supplied
the correct info needed to correct a problem, so in your shoes, I'd carry on
    using the plate.

Or sir should insist that a cloud passed under the sun at the time. Proving
otherwise without photo evidence may prove quite difficult.

Government website - it contradicts itself. In the PDF linked to on the
page, it comes out at 9.5 weeks. If you've got flexibility on where you
can take your test, you can choose somewhere with a 6 week wait. If you
are flexible on the amount of notice you need, then ticking the box for
accepting other people's cancelled slots can get you an appointment in
2 weeks. The waiting times shot down ages ago when they hired in
more testers, and started a contract with a private firm for the backlog.
