He can trade in his UK/NI one for an ROI version without doing another
    test though.

I've just paid that for my Irish one. I dropped the application in to
the London passport office on a Tuesday and had my new passport in the
    post on the Saturday.

  8. That's not strictly true.

The Yanks didn't even ask for my UK licence, and I won't have to turn it
in when I convert to a cloggy licence later this year either.

Unfortunately for me, the UK one is coming up for renewal, so I'm going
to have to think that one through a bit longer.

But they made you sit a 'test', right?
'Cos you'll hand in the US one instead?

Easy. Ask for a new one, as his other one "got lost" and exchange one
    for an ROI licence.

I found out recently that for totting up purposes there are only very
few offences which count from date of conviction and careless isn't one
    of them.

Roll on the 10th of June!

  15. Huh. And the rest.
The pisspots for UKers abroad are handled by some ripoff agency and they
    certainly know how to charge.

Yeah, I think mine was 130 odd, however, I got it in 4 days of posting
it. You don't get that in the UK. Also it gets issued by the FCO,
which has led to some discussions. And the fact the RFID doesn't
work, but don't start me on that.

  17. Coming back through Stansted this year, I was invited with others to go
through an automated passport checker as we had passports with chips in.
My wife went through a normal channel where a 'person' checked the
    passport.

After going through, she waited some time before I appeared. The system
had failed to work for me and the half dozen others with me. This was
with repeated tries with an 'assistant' getting me to position my head
different ways etc. And for those who know me, I was the only one of the
    group with a beard.

TBF mine only took around the same to come back. I used the post
office service, they check it's all in order and then send directly. I
think it's around an extra £10.

As I said elsewhere, once you exchange one licence for another, the
first is invalidated. So you may still have a copy, but it's a copy of
a licence that's no longer valid.

  20. Home? I am home. I have no intention of ever again living in the
    shitehole the UK has become.
