  3. There are many HRC kit swingarms however what they share in common is a
    different attach point for the
pro link arm and double titanium pinch bolts... this affords the shock a more
one to one ratio for rigors of
WSB racing... I'll have to complete an engineering study... with the help of
Tony Foale's book... in order to
know what to machine for the successful mating of my current Ohlins...

The holy grail of HRC swingarms are 98 to 99 models which are gold in color
    because they are cast
Magnesium which weights in at only 8.2 pounds... mine is unfortunately a 96 made
    out of aluminum... so it
weights 11.8 pounds or about the same as stock... so no weight savings this
    time...

I'd sheets m' drawers if I ever came across an genuine HRC magnesium swingarm...
I keep a special fund on
    standby just in case...

I'm surprised you haven't machined your own magnesium swingarm in the
    BLS yet!

Is it a good idea to put a hunk of magnesium so close to an engine?

Could you achieve similar weight savings with titanium?

  7. There have been a number of successes producing whole engines out of
    magnesium...

Titanium piece that size would be prohibitly expensive even for Honda...

  8. Strictly speaking magnesium-aluminum alloy - about 2/3 the weight of real
aluminum. (Aluminium in the UK and other parts of the Commonwealth)

I believe the titanium we see more and more of is also alloyed with aluminum
    but I could be wrong.

As for machining magnesium alloys - best left to the experts :)

Hehe... most aviation turboshaft/turboprop engines have magnesium gear
boxes... so, yeah... it's no biggie...
    Not practically. Ti6-4 isn't lighter than Aluminum 7075. It's 66%
heavier while being about twice as strong. It's also expensive, and MUCH
harder to work with, plus it has a terrible tendency for galvanic
corrosion and sensitivity to heat treatment.

Okay, not to put a damper on a great buy, but really, what does 3.6 pounds
gain you? You could get on the treadmill, and take a dump, and that will get
    you 3.6 pounds.

I just don't understand the quest to shave off 3.8 oz through titanium
    bolts....

  11. Up side of reducing the weight of your suspension components... is that it will
allow the suspension to react quicker to the surface irregularities... the down
side is a harsher ride... and I would gladly trade comfort for control any
    day...

  12. Couldn't you get the same improvement in sprung to unsprung weight
by just increasing the sprung weight of the bike and/or rider ?

I think this is the approach that Harley took.
