Calling diesel heads

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by rufty_tufty_hoolythug, Aug 5, 2009.

  1. My wife has an Hyundai Accent 1.5 Diesel 2002 model. Shortly after
buying it, it would not start for me when I left work. I cranked it 4
or 5 times and got nothing. I went back into my office, left it ten
minutes, went back out and it started as if nothing had happened.

That was quite a few weeks ago. Yesterday my wife was out in the car
and on leaving the local Tesco it would not rev. The throtte pedal
did nothing. She called the RAC who came out and basically fiddled
about and the car start revving again and carried on as if nothing had
happened. The RAC man said that he had hadn't actually done anyting
    to get it going again.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? While on the
subject, what's the best way to change a diesel fuel filter? I've
heard bad things about disturbing a diesel's fuel supply and setting
up airlocks which I think changing the fuel filter is kind of going to
    do.

Kwik fit or it's equivalent. You can't buy the filter and oil cheaper
than you pay them to change it and dispose of the waste.

I'm sure I got a voucher for £5 off a oil and filter change from
National posted through the door the other day which will make it even
    cheaper.

    How much do Krap-**** charge?

For my Saab, I just got a couple of genuine oil filters for less than £3
each, and a sump washer about 50p.
I bought 20 litres of full synch Fuchs oil from Opie Oils for £62 - just
over £3/litre. So an oil change - with a known brand and grade of top
quality oil - gives change from £20, and you've got plenty for top-ups
and future changes, so don't have to pay Halfrauds or petrol station rip-
off prices for a litre bottle. It's free to get shot of the old oil and
filter down at the local tip.

And - even better - I don't get a big long list of non-existant faults
and high-pressure selling that it's "dangerous" to take it out of there
    without having them fixed.

What he said. Mind you, for a high-performance diesel[1] I'd want to
know what oil they're putting in it. My Scoob, for instance, uses some
very special fully synthetic lube. I had a 6k miles interim oil and
filter change[2] done last week by the supplying dealer.

[1] ie: probably not a Hyundai.
[2] "Oil is cheap[3] and engines are expensive".
[3] £68 was the bill. I didn't think that was bad at all for a couple
of gallons of 'proper' oil, filter and labour.

stick your reg no in this and see if they match the spec
    http://www.national.co.uk/order_oil.asp

They recommend Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 for my car, which meets the handbook
    spec.

"The oil required for your vehicle is not currently available from
this web site, please refer to your vehicle owner's manual." Heh. Said
it was very special. Useful little link that is, all the same.

Naah, it says that if I put the old Volvo's reg in, and that
definitely had a Castrol product recommended. I think its just that
their reg look-up isn't very good and can't always get the correct
vehicle details. (A made-up plate gives a different message).

He was talking about the in-line fuel filter, do Kwikfit change those?

I tend to use the latter as I think they tend to be hugely over-priced
compared to a good motor factor.

I'm not really sure that helps his case much.

    D'oh !

Heh, well spotted. They only change the fuel filter if you put it in for
the full service at £139, so a DIY job for a couple of quid is the way
    to go on that.

I should have spotted that, I've just disposed of 160 litres of fuel in
the form of waste veg oil that I'd had lying around since getting rid of
    the Pajero.

Too right. Bulbs from Halfords: individually blister packed, sometimes
in pairs, and twice the price they cost from the Tunbridge Wells old-
fashioned[1] accessory shop, where they just open a drawer, rummage,
pull out a cardboard box, and hand them over.

[1] Imagine the 'Four Candles' sketch set in a motor factor, and
    you'll have it perfectly pictured.
