Suppose a chap had a large bridge-type digital camera and was looking
for a case to carry it in, that was not too bulky, but would protect
the camera sufficiently, while stashed in a top box or hard pannier.

Anyone any recommendations (other than use a tank bag)?

Lowe Alpine make some very good bags.

Plastic lunch box with foam inserts cut to suit. Works a treat for my
kit - a Canon MV850 when I connect it to a remote camera. If it stays in
the top box and looks aren't important.

    How "large"

    This http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?&products_id=101011
fits my Olympus SP-560, with room to spare, but won't fit the Nikon D80.

That would do it, but would it protect the camera from all the
rattling and bouncing in a half empty box/pannier?

My wee Sony does ok with a sweatshirt wrapped round the case, but this
could get killed in short order, I reckon, if I did the same...

May as well fill the box/pannier with foam...

I wonder do they do one that locks to a Givi baseplate?

  8. The Pelican will withstand a truck rolling over it, or being submerged
in water - and are available in many sizes.

When I took my DLSR to WavyDavy's, I used a Pelican small enough for
the body and two lenses and a bunch of bungee cords.
I doubt it. You could easily mod one, but then you'd lose the
    waterproofness.

Unless you use a plastic welder or industrial-strength glue. :)
And screws could also be protected with rubber seals, so it's
not like you have to lose the waterproofness.

There are a few threads at advrider.com on modding Pelican
cases to lock to givi mounts, but I'm too lazy to slog through
    their forum interface.

I just shove a coat in the box and use that for padding.
