Why? Such position and time information, gathered from mobile phone/network
data, is often used in criminal cases.

  7. Yes, but the OP was talking about his *own* device, yes? If you gather the
info from the network provider, there are very strong rules of evidence
around validity and admissibility and veracity, to use a few long words.
    Been there, done that.

    following:
So if I want to whizz up the motorway at 180 I've got to turn my phone
off just incase I don't fancy stopping?

Only if you've "done a bank" or committed murder or rape at one end of the
motorway and are trying to establish a alibi by being at the other end.

Phone position information is not detailed enough (yet) for speeding but it
is part of the overall forensics catalogue.

  10. <snort> No, you silly boy. They'd have to have linked clear evidence of how
you were travelling, for one thing.

  11. Quite. And they also have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the phone
    was with you. Or not.
It's not bad in terms of location: down to, what, a metre on 3G now?

You're more likely to be nicked for mincing while filtering and wearing
a jacket and boots that don't match.

Not sure off the top of my head. A major difference between 2G and 3G
is that the phone is told when to report information to the network
(i.e. "when serving cell quality/strength goes below value x report all
neighbour cell information to the network") whereas with 2G it
automatically reported the top 6 NCells and the serving cell roughly
twice a second (when in call).

The information on the NCells could be used for analysis to work out
where you were; this information is more readily available on 2G than
    3G.

Further there was something called 'timing advance' on 2G (since it's a
TDMA system you don't want 'timeslots' overlapping so depending on the
distance the terminal is from the cell it's told to send its
transmissions 'earlier'... advance them if you like so that all
transmissions are received when expected. TA was useful as a sanity
check on location (it was only available fr the serving cell.) This
isn't available on 3G (no need to time-align for CDMA)

If anything I'd imaging that 3G's 'native' tools for working out
location are worse than those available for 2G. Won't be looking into
this over the next few days though!

It hasn't been washed for a very, very long time. Or ever, come to
    think of it.
