  1. ....that replacing steering head bearings is about my least favourite
    motorcycling maintenance job?

    Thanks.

    DT50MX done: Z650 next.

I had to change front wheel bearings in the 9R yesterday but they're
easy compared to the hassle of doing steering head bearings.

Swing arm and suspension linkage bearings are my least fave. Don't mind the
    head bearings to be honest.

*gloom* K1100LT felt a bit 'notchy'. I've been trying to pretend it's
worn tyres but know it's not.

I think this is going to be a mother-fucker of a job. Still it can
wait; I think that the K1100 will only get another day or two's use
before it's put away for the winter.

PS I did the head bearings on the 650 a short while ago, and while I had the
fork legs off popped some gaiters on them.

  10. I checked the races on mine - they're fine. For something as big as this
sort of job, I'll GAMI. I simply can't be arsed to DIY.

Looks like I may be doing a bit of engine removal soonish. These "engine
    hoist" things: good, are they?

Did mine a few weeks ago, and considering it was the first time I'd done
wheel bearings, it wasn't that bad. Certainly be easy enough next time.

I reckon brake caliper seals are the worst job.

Oh, and guess what I need to do...

    Sigh.

The reg/rec seemed knacked, so that's been replaced, and I was seeing
voltage from the alternator. But there's no extra volts showing up at the
    lead/acid end of the business.

Closer inspection shows that the actual AC voltage across the alternator
    phases is 20-5-5. Ish.

I wouldn't be without mine. TBH, they're a bit OTT for most bike
engines[1] but they don't half make it easier. "Up half a gnat's tadger.
Right, let's stop and have a good look round. Looks OK, up a shade more.
Hold it there. Oh, right drop it a tiny bit. Hold it... OK. I think
that's OK. Left a bit. Now back up bit. Blimey, Eric's gone a very
    strange colour!"

    Much betterer with hydraulics.

[1] Unless you're talking about something bizarre like a GlodWing...

I think it's because previously I've always been reluctant to split the
caliper, which makes it a right PITA to get at the things. These days
I'm much happier to take almost anything to pieces.
I've just thought of something worse: anything on the GSX600F.

I'd agree. 'specially if you've got a vacuum bleeder.
I can; anything that needs the clutch bellhousing removed from a BMW K
series bike. Probably not so bad when they were new, but 20 years on
there will be multiple, fucked fastners to overcome. It's a full
weekend job. Especially fucking shitty if they have the ABS system
    fitted.

Well, we both own one and Dodger is similarly afflicted. I'd like a
Robbo to be taken into consideration too.

    The prosecution rests, m'lud.
