The thing I find interesting is that this was all over a discussion on
human rights in China. What could she have said that set him off?

<worried> Yet again I find myself agreeing with you.

I'm quite sure that if the USA invaded the UK in order to remove David
Cameron and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Brits in the
process I'd feel rather as the protestors do.

    The forces? **** 'em.

It's been 64 years since the last truly justified war with British
involvement. I've little sympathy for anyone daft enough to sign up
    since then.

I think going into the former Yugoslavia to stop a genocide was a pretty
    justified thing to do.

Sierra Leone (although taking a little more eptitude wouldn't have been a
    bad idea).

The highest trending topic on twitter at the moment is #IAmSpartacus...
everyone's retweeting his original joke. Brilliant!

Because if his was worthy of prosecution then so should all the others
(including mine) be. I really like twitter but it hits productivity
    worse than UKRM.

The very fact that it's being so widely retweeted, especially with the
Spartacus tag means that it can't be considered to have "menacing
content" - which was the whole reason he was found guilty in the first
    place.

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/21/section/127
127 Improper use of public electronic communications network

(1)A person is guilty of an offence if he—
(a)sends by means of a public electronic communications network a message
or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or
    menacing character

And, just for context, he was fined less than £400 originally...

Nevertheless, it sends out something of a message that a sizeable
proportion of the people who were most likely to see the original tweet
think the legal system has fucked up on this matter.
