In terms of accessability, retention and 'searchability' twitter is no
    different to a usenet newsgroup.

Everyone should have the right to tweet anything they like, but to be
held accountable in no different way to it being said, or written.

The current disparity between laws concerning the printed or spoken
word and those concerning an electronic communication medium is what
    worries me.

I don't expect it to achieve much, but it beats grumbling on Twitter
    and Usenet, no?

I was impressed by the personal response I got from Rob Marris to my
Libel Law Reform enquiry. Unfortunately he wasn't re-elected[1]. As a
former solicitor (still running free legal advice clinics I'm pleased to
see) he might have had an informed view on the matter. I shall write to
his Tory replacement and see what reaction I get.

    Or 'grown up'.

[1] I voted for him (tactically).

    Is the right answer.
Hmm, so do you think if Mr Chambers had written what he did in a letter
to a newspaper (and had it published) or had said it on a phone in radio
program it would have been sensibly ignored?

TBF it may say a lot about the potential power of the medium that the
authorities are taking it seemingly so seriously.

Probably not, but if he'd walked into a pub and been yelling it to a
    few mates..
I suspect they don't like what they can't understand or control.
Nowadays it takes less than 30 seconds to reach an audience of
millions, and only a mouse click to pass the message on. There's no
room for censorship or spin when 1000 different voices are essentially
    telling the same story.

  7. I have no interest in Twitter - the whole concept just passes me by.
Usenet - well yes I have the odd rant and moan on here.

I think it's just the way you painted a picture of being close to the
upper echelons of the Lib Dems that made me react. It just seemed a tad
pompous really. I remain completely unconvinced that the Lib Dems are
having any positive impact whatsoever on this wretched government.

The irony here, of course, is that Y A-B turned away from Labour before
the election and said she supported the Lib Dems. I can't imagine how
wretched she must feel for supporting them and then getting this nasty
government in power. The double irony will be, if as a result of this
complaint, the legislation gets repealed or changed with Lib Dem
support. Talk about being careful what you wish for.

The picture is entirely your interpretation. I only mentioned who I'd
contact (and having recently moved I don't even know who my MP is).

As to whether they'd have any impact, I specifically said I'd ask
them what they'd try to do about it, not what they would do to solve
    it.

A claim to a direct line to god that is not. But don't stop flouncing
    on my account.

Yup, I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be in the first
couple-of-dozen-or-so peope who retweeted it as it could just as easily
have died on it's arse as a concept, and landed them in trouble on
    similar jumped-up charges.

Did I disagree? Perhaps Colin should have spelled out the "without
    facing the consequences" bit?

This prosecution is becoming a 'test case'. There is more than one point
of law raised by it. The higher the court that it reaches the more a
precedent will be set. We can but hope that the ultimate outcome will be
a triumph for 'natural justice'. Otherwise, anything capable of being
construed as 'menacing' when taken out of context will be impossible to
state in a medium which can be accessed by readers other than the
initially intended audience. Remember our exchange about humour?

You will have to forgive my old gimmer ways of going about things. For
what it's worth I've just emailed Paul Uppal MP (with a link to Jack of
kent's blog). It remains to be seen whether I get the courtesy of a
    reply.

  19. Anything involving Fry tends to get me irritated.

I don't give a shit if we hang-draw-and-quarter people for saying stupid
things on twitter. Then again I don't much get this post my daily
    movements/thoughts mindset.

There are much more important things to worry about at the moment than
some tosser being given a fine for saying something stupid. Sure it's a
stupid reaction but then again I'm used to reading about those. Time
    for a Frank Zappa (mis)quote; they claim we're a carbon based life-form
since carbon is the most common element on earth. They're wrong. We're
    a stupidity based life-form.
