Simple carb like an old Dellorto or complicated Nipponese CV job with
accelerator pump, diaphragm and lots of teeny, weeny, drillings to get
    bunged up?

If the former access to an ultrasonic cleaning bath is all you need IMO.
Does a kit include a new slide ?

Compared to cleaning the old jets, and re-using the old gaskets?

    Yes.
If you are rebuilding a carb, it always pays to fit new gaskets, o rings
and seals, as old ones perish. It is possible to re-use the old, but why
bother if new parts are available at a reasonable price.

Now I would call that just a 'gasket set' rather than a rebuild kit.
Just £8 for a Dellorto PHBH - so agreed.

It is the carb of an XR600R, a single, so price is not as important as in a
    four legged engine.

From some XR600R forum got a link to this, which looks pretty complete.

No idea about what it is, I'll simply ask a mechanic mate to do it for me ;)

You and Mark Olson (smart for a Merkin, innit? ;) say the same... and I
admit the carb probably only needs cleaning. But I have just downloaded the
maintenance manual and I feel I have to do it! :)

BTW, very understandabla manual from Honda, I must say.

I wish "decent" carb cleaner was still available though. I have a rather
nice ultrasonic cleaner, but I'm sure some of that really nasty
environmentally unfriendly stuff would help the job along a whole lot
    quicker.

Ok, ok, ok... I'll first try cleaning. After all, the bike worked fine 2
years ago, when it was neglected.

Yebbut the 400/4 carbs piss fuel if the O rings and/or float valves are
in the least bit iffy, the floats stick on their hinges, and the well
hidden emulsion tubes get bunged up.
The overhaul kits are a good, if expensive, option.
