Castrol Magnetec

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Apr 3, 2004.

  1. Any good for a CBR thou?

The blurb on the bottle says "Modern engines" but as the motor revs to
10,000 or so I'd like to know if the oil in question was "modern"
    enough.

    Cheers

I wouldn't bother with Magnatec myself, as it's a load of bollocks all
    that 'magnetic globules' stuff.

However, a good quality car oil will be fine in the bike. You pay (lots)
extra for a picture of a bike on the bottle.

I'd maybe think about a specific bike oil if I were riding something
that revved to 14-odd thou rpm, but for old-tech like the CBR (or even
my VFR), then a decent quality car oil will be fine.

(I used to run my Diversion 600 on the cheapest Homebase own brand oil -
made it to in the region of 80k miles and was still running sweet when I
    sold it)

Don't bother, it's not worth the money.

A good quality mineral 10-W40, changed regularly, will do the job and
    be cheaper.

My Honda has some super dooper Castrol synthetic stuff in it (courtesy of
the last service), but the TS uses whatever we can find (currently some VW
stuff discovered in a dusty cannister at the back of the garage, circa 1992
    when SWMBO had a Polo)

I've always put decent oil in my bikes. I've got the mind of a little
extra going a long way, you're right about the TS though; IIRR, I put
the same sort of stuff in mine, the £4.99 for 5 litres sort of stuff :)

It's an uneasy feeling TBH, but then I have put cheap oil/mixed oil in
my bikes so yeah, you're right ;-)

Halfords semi-synth bike stuff goes in mine. But I would have thought
any decent 10-40w would be fine.

It's actually a pretty good oil, the magnetic stuff notwithstanding.
Hmmm, did I miss anything somewhere, I was always under the impression
that car oil wasn't good for wet clutches?

I used Magnatec in the K100 though, but then I got that free from work,
and the K100 has a dry plate clutch.

I'll try that actually. I used to put Guardian in, but I'm fucked if I'm
paying nearly £18 for five litres now I'm not working.

No. Don't do it if you have a wet clutch as others have already said.

    See the question

"Can I use car engine oil in my motorbike then?"

about 2/3rds of the way down this page.

But I thought car oil had extra slippery stuff in it and that was no good
    for wet clutches.
My clutch used to slip on my TRX until I ran it on Semi Synth.

drugs began to take hold. I remember "Big Tony"
It's a good page, but it makes a generalisation about that. Plenty of
motorcycle engines have had and will have car oil in. The friction
modifiers will only have a noticeable effect on a wet clutch when
there's a sizeable amount of torque being transmitted.

For most commuting and cooking bikes, car oil is fine.

Some car oil isn't good for bikes, it's a lottery though. Find one that
doesn't make the clutch slip and use it. Same goes for non certified
bike oils too. I just use Halfords synthetic oil for cars in both my
bikes with no problems. It's the cost of a decent bike semi synth too.

Yebbut, it's expensive to find out if you're wrong, so why not just buy
a good bike oil, they aren't *that* much more expensive.

Expensive to find out you're wrong? Why? Rather like putting a non MA
certified bike oil in your bike then.

Thanks. You've inadvertently reminded me that Castrol magnatec is no
good. Not for bandits anyway, I distinctly remember the clutch slipping
when the engine was cold and only started to bite properly after at
    least ten minutes.
I change my mind as often as the wind but semi-synth bike stuff is what
    I'll do.

Because if you're wrong, you **** the clutch, and possibly get stuck
    somewhere into the bargain.

Have you screwed your clutch up by putting a cage oil in your bike? I'm
interest now, to see who has screwed their clutches up, because I've
never heard of that happening before.
