CB72 progress

  1. Not much progress since a month ago really - rear mudguard is in, centre
stand on, and much polishing of hubs and top yoke.

I've decided to rechrome the exhausts, so I've spent some time grinding
down the bodge welds somebody had done - they won't be perfect but I
don't really want to spend 500 quid on NOS, and the repro Apex ones look
rubbish. Hopefully they'll look pretty good, the majority of the dents
are on the underneath, and only one weld should be slightly visible and
that's near the pillion footrest anyway.

I'm getting pretty frustrated with the chromers, I've got a week off
work next week and if it's not ready by then I'll be very annoyed, I'm
really waiting for the wheel spindles and some brake and fork bits to
get this back to a rolling chassis.

Nothing done on the engine yet - I took one of the rocker caps off to
have a go at polishing it, they're going to be a bit of work to get
shiny. Good news is that there was no rust on the valve gear.

Been collecting parts off ebay too, now got a set of tank badges, a
steering lock cover and a few other bits.

  2. Coo, that's coming along, innit?
A Classic Bike Cosmic Law is that chromers *always* take four times as
long as they promised to get the job done. A bit like builders.
I love this. "I've got a steering lock cover!" No matter that the rest
of the bike is u/s, there's always *one* part that you can parade in
front of friends, and promise: "The rest of this will look like that,
    honest."

  4. Well anybody that uses RD350 carbs as examples can't be all bad - I'll
    bookmark that - thanks.

  8. Isn't it? And where would generations of bike builders be without the
    obligatory beer crate.

  9. I've hit some snags, which means it's going to be a while before any
more serious progress is made. On the other hand I think I'm just going
to chuck the forks on without some of the covers just so I can get to
the stage of pushing it about and getting the bars and some other bits
built up. I think I need some fast progress for a bit of motivation.

I never realised just what a big dent in bike restoration time having a
kid was going to make. I might have to reconsider the next project
    being a car.
