I did suggest looking in the owners manual, but he didn't get one, and
he can't find the seat lock.
Problem with the angle grinder, he aint got a lighter socket on the
    bike to plug it into.

    It'll be under the seat.

  5. look for a small key operated lock underneath the rear of the bike seat or
a couple of small bolts under the fabric edge of the seat for starters .

also have a look for any self tappers etc , on a bike that old the original
lock could be knackered and the previous owners just screwed it down

Locate small key lock under seat (Probably rear lhs). Place key in lock and
turn. Now the tricky part; secure the seat using over head cable or rope and
slowly ease the bike away using lifting gear or a trolley system.

Discard bike and you should be left with seat ready for overhaul.

emerged from their own little world to say
IIRC Honda didn't get around to fitting a key operated seat lock on the
CBR600 until the FX model came out in 1999. I owned one of these.

My mate had an early 90s CBR6. To get the seat off you need a screwdriver
to remove IIRC 2 retaining screws on the side-stand side of the bike. Also
IIRC the seat is hinged on the other side and flips up. This is a tad
inconvenient if you are out on the road as the toolkit lives under the
    seat.

  10. Heh. Um, radical thought this, but has he considered asking a Honda
    dealer?

On my '97 CBR you remove both side panels and undo the two bolts
    holding the seat on ... you'll need a 12mm spanner/socket.

That might be it. Seemed daft anyway considering the position of the
    toolkit!

For a socket to plug his angle grinder into? Bet they don't get asked
    for them very often.

I had a '93 CBR - and the procedure for removing the seat matched the
    above accurately.
The toolkit is (supposedly!) accessible by removing one of the smaller
panels; memory-fragments (from reading the Haynes manual, since my toolkit
    was missing) suggests 'starboard' side...

But certainly not on a '98 CBR6..you need to remove the two full
sidepanels in order to remove the seat. Obviously, the removal of one
sidepanel allows access to the toolkit, but it's a right pain in the
    arse.
